Captured Moments: Spotlight on Benjamin Williamson’s Photography of the Week

Greetings 2025!

This past month has been absolutely wild for our family here in Maine as we transitioned from Bath to Sheepscot. Things are finally beginning to quiet down a bit, and I’m eager for some ice skating this week due to the frigid temperatures and absence of snow, and then, hopefully, we’ll see some snowfall before our Winter in Acadia Workshop and my yearly climb up Katahdin at Baxter State Park. January is certainly a thrilling month!

While driving to Portland to fetch our au pair yesterday, I noticed some spectacular happenings in the sky. I was pressed for time, but since I was on Route 1 in Brunswick, I recalled a place to pull over.

The vistas from the Androscoggin Swinging Bridge are among my favorites. This side faces southwest toward the old Black Bridge, which once featured a deck for vehicles beneath the railroad bridge when I was a child, but that has now been taken down.

I wish there was some snow to illuminate the foreground, but I would gladly appreciate a sky like this any day. It was absolutely breathtaking! The wave patterns in the clouds are a result of orographic effects, specifically air flowing over the White Mountains. I observed some lenticular clouds prior to capturing this image, but they are hidden from this perspective by the trees.
