Winter Woes: Amtrak Disruptions in Philadelphia During Snowy Showdown

PHILADELPHIA – As Philadelphia observes its first substantial snowfall from Sunday night into Monday, various transportation services have announced route alterations or cancellations.

The subsequent service changes have been instituted for the well-being of Amtrak passengers and personnel due to the winter storm:

Sunday, January 5

Northeast

Northeast Regional (Boston and Washington):

• Train 67 is canceled.
• Train 195 is canceled between Washington and Richmond.
• Train 157 is canceled between Washington and Norfolk.

Monday, January 6

Northeast

Acela (Operating between Boston and Washington):

• Trains 2103, 2107, 2108, 2121, 2122, & 2124 are canceled.
• Trains 2150, 2154, 2168, 2170, & 2172 are canceled between Washington and New York.
• Trains 2151, 2153, 2155, 2159, & 2173 are canceled between New York and Washington.

Northeast Regional (Boston and Washington):

• Train 141, 94 & 95 are canceled between Norfolk and Washington.
• Train 171 is canceled between Roanoke and Washington.
• Train 125 is canceled between Washington and Newport News.
• Train 93 is canceled between New York and Norfolk.
• Train 174 is canceled between Richmond and Washington.
• Trains 170, 130, 172, 112, 182, 84, 86, 134, 138, 66, 151, 181, 119, 131, 193, 197, 175, 179, & 85 are canceled.

State Supported Service

Carolinian (Operating between Charlotte and New York):

• Trains 79 & 80 are canceled between New York and Raleigh.

Tuesday, January 7

Northeast

Northeast Regional (Boston and Washington):

• Train 86 is canceled between Richmond and Washington.
• Train 84 is canceled between Norfolk and Washington.

As of Sunday evening at 7 p.m., there have been over 140 flight delays and more than 30 cancellations registered at Philadelphia International Airport.

Safety Measures

While individuals typically associate jumper cables and first aid kits with vehicle emergency supplies, AAA representatives are suggesting that individuals stock up on additional items to keep within their vehicles.

“Ensure you have a portable collapsible snow shovel on hand in case you need to dig out,” remarked Jana Tidwell, AAA Public Affairs. “A snow brush and ice scraper to thoroughly clear your vehicle before driving, ample washer fluid, and deicer spray as salt and brine accumulate rapidly on the windshield are advantageous during winter driving; also, rock salt and kitty litter can be useful for additional traction beneath your tires.”

Even if you may not utilize all these items for this storm, AAA emphasizes the necessity of always being prepared.

PennDOT urges individuals to refrain from traveling on Monday if possible.

PennDOT personnel have been actively treating, salting, and brining the roads since Sunday. Officials have indicated crews will reconvene starting Monday at midnight and will continue working throughout the storm.

Their primary focus remains on interstates and expressways.
