Blazing Trails: The Dynamic World of UAB Athletics

BIRMINGHAM – UAB women’s basketball welcomes Memphis on Wednesday, January 8 at Bartow Arena. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live on ESPN+. 

The Blazers enter Wednesday’s matchup with a record of 9-6 overall and 0-3 in conference play, while Memphis stands at 3-10 for the season and 1-1 in league play. This game represents the 57th meeting between the two teams, with the Tigers leading the historical series 34-22. 

Memphis comes off a 73-71 defeat to North Texas on Saturday, whereas UAB lost to Wichita State 82-70 on the same day. 

Maddie Walsh was the Blazers’ top scorer with 19 points, while Sara Bershers achieved a season-high of 16 points. Journey Armstead contributed 15 points along with five rebounds and five assists. Molly Moffitt was the leading rebounder for UAB, achieving a career-high of 13 rebounds. 

The Blazers dominated the first two quarters, but the Shockers exploited a strong third quarter to take and hold the lead through the end of the game. The score was tied five times in the third quarter and included four lead exchanges. WSU took the lead at 55-54 with 2:38 remaining and retained it throughout the remainder of the contest. 

Both teams exchanged leads, but Wichita State shot 50 percent in the fourth quarter to maintain their advantage. 

Walsh leads UAB with an average of 13.1 points per game, with Bershers closely following at 10.5 points. Armstead averages 10.1 points, while Jade Weathersby scores 8.5 points per game. Rayne Tucker averages 8.3 points, and Tracey Bershers contributes 6.3 points per game. Weathersby leads in rebounds, averaging 8.5 per game. 

Offensively, the Tigers are spearheaded by Tilly Boler (17.5 ppg), DeeDee Hagemann (16.0 ppg), Alasia Smith (12.5 ppg), Hannah Riddick (11.5 ppg), and Tanyuel Welch (10.0 ppg).
