ABOUT FLATLAND CAVALRY
Flatland Cavalry is set to take off. After years of exciting performances in their home state of Texas, this country band is poised for a breakthrough with the launch of their third full-length album, the sonically expansive and nostalgically crafted Welcome to Countryland.
The Texas sextet—frontman and principal lyricist Cleto Cordero, guitarist Reid Dillon, bassist Jonathan Saenz, drummer Jason Albers, fiddle player Wesley Hall, and recent addition Adam Gallegos on multiple instruments—continue to sustain their signature style while delving into uncharted territories. When it came time to start working on a new album, remaining complacent was simply not an option.
Following the success of 2019’s critically-lauded Homeland Insecurity and their debut full-length album Humble Folks in 2016, they’ve been on a positive path climbing through the country music scene. After collaborating with Lubbock’s own Scott Faris in the welcoming space of Amusement Park Studios for years, Flatland recognized that a shift in their environment was essential. Despite some reluctance and a blend of emotions, they immediately realized that recording at Nashville’s Sound Emporium Studio A with emerging producer Jake Gear was the correct decision.
As their roster of trusted collaborators (Spencer Cullum, Jim Hoke, Billy Justineau, Hailey Whitters, and Kaitlin Butts) expanded in tandem with Flatland’s evolving sound, Countryland is not merely a compilation featuring studio musicians from Nashville. Instead, it showcases the rootsy Texans offering their best performances, shaped by countless tours zigzagging across the nation, transforming them into seasoned performers and musicians.
Since their modest origins in Lubbock, Texas’s Panhandle, Flatland Cavalry has embraced their environment and deep West Texas heritage. Established in 2014 while they were students at Texas Tech University, Cordero and his band made significant inroads in the songwriting and dancehall scenes of the Hub City. Leveraging Cordero’s sincere songwriting and the band’s mix of country instrumentation, foot-tapping beats, and addictive choruses, Flatland quickly rose to regional fame.
ABOUT THE WILDER BLUE
Sharp narrative skills. Captivating and beautiful five-part harmonies. Arrangements that oscillate between vibrant, engaging liveliness and poignant, stirring chills. These are the fundamental components that define the sound of The Wilder Blue, a Texas-based quintet who bring their unique twist to rock-tinged country with their namesake sophomore album.
Anchored by the sharp storytelling of lead vocalist Zane Williams, Paul Eason’s prominent lead guitar, the imaginative duo of drummer Lyndon Hughes and bassist Sean Rodriguez, and the striking creativity of multi-instrumentalist Andy Rogers, The Wilder Blue are just beginning to explore their significant potential.
Williams and Eason in 2019 started conceptualizing the formation of a new band by searching for a versatile group of collaborators. Aiming to emphasize a rich vocal harmony that could easily be reproduced in live settings, they soon brought in Hughes and Rogers. The addition of Rodriguez completed the group as a unified entity.
Tracks such as the lively “The Conversation” illustrate The Wilder Blue tapping into the soaring country spirit of the Eagles, incorporating a vocal run interlude that recalls ’60s The Beatles and timeless bluegrass. On songs like “Wave Dancer” and the album opener “Picket Fences,” all five musicians infuse life into traditional five-part harmonies that are enchanting and captivating.
Alongside the powerful harmonies and expansive sonic range, Williams’ talent for crafting vivid five-minute stories serves as another foundation for The Wilder Blue. The album The Wilder Blue couldn’t truly be complete without leveraging the strong and effective storytelling of Williams.
