Happy’s Haven Takes a Humorous Jab at Reba McEntire’s Gig on The Voice

Happy’s Place discovered a way to make light of Reba McEntire‘s role as a coach on another NBC show, The Voice.

In the episode that aired on Friday, January 3, of the popular sitcom, Bobbie (McEntire) and Gabby (Melissa Peterman) vie for the opportunity to host the Tavern’s anniversary celebration. Bobbie sought assistance from Emmett (Rex Linn, McEntire’s actual partner), which led to an unexpected and amusing reply.

“I understand you may not be familiar with judging a talent competition,” Emmett joked. “But decisions ought to be based on ability and ability only.”

He further commented: “That is precisely what America expects and what America deserves.”

Prior to McEntire’s role in Happy’s Place, she had a brief stint as a judge on America’s Got Talent back in 2016. Later, she became a coach on The Voice following Blake Shelton‘s departure in 2023. The country music sensation experienced a measure of success during her tenure in seasons 24 to 26, ultimately achieving victory with Asher HaVon in 2024.

McEntire’s latest series, which debuted in October, has included several not-so-subtle nods to her previous on-screen roles. The narrative centers around Bobbie, who inherits her father’s eatery and uncovers a new business partner in the half-sister (Belissa Escobedo) she was unaware of.

Alongside series creator Kevin Abbott‘s previous association with McEntire’s Reba sitcom, Peterman, 53, also appeared on the program. Their former Reba co-star Steve Howey recently landed a guest role on Happy’s Place.

“Kevin had this concept for this character in advance. And then he said, ‘What if Howey could do it? That would be fantastic to create a reunion.’ I matched the character profile so he contacted me,” Howey, 47, recounted during an interview with Us Weekly in December 2024. “The stars just lined up for this one.”

Howey’s role as Danny included multiple Easter eggs referencing his time portraying Van on Reba.

“Those subtle winks and nods truly enhance the experience for the viewers,” he remarked. “The line I delivered was during my initial entrance when Reba was sketching on Melissa’s drawing and added a mustache. I say, ‘Hey, great mustache.’ She turns around and replies, ‘I wish I could say the same about yours.’ That was my dialogue with Reba — and that showcases how incredible Reba is. I can suggest an idea, and she’s like, ‘I’ll give it a shot.’”

The performer expressed his satisfaction that Danny did not turn into a mere replica of Van.

“Van is clearly distinct because I was an entirely different person then. I was much younger, far more innocent, and considerably more inexperienced. This was my first regular series role, hence it felt brand new. Now, after over 20 years, I can bring a variety of experiences to the roles I undertake,” he clarified. “Additionally, the character dynamics — given that Happy’s Place is something novel — are altered. While it features Reba and Melissa, the characters themselves are not the same. Bobbie has a considerably different persona compared to Reba. Gabby is fundamentally different from Barbara Jean, and Danny is certainly distinct as well.”

He elaborated: “This character manages his own business. He possesses wealth and participates in this game. As you noted, Danny was aware of their intentions all along. … They share something unique [with Happy’s Place] that simply resonates, and Reba has recognized another golden opportunity.”
