The community performance venue Applecart Arts has closed permanently due to financial difficulties. Activists from Equity had been advocating for the preservation of this cherished place, which served as a vital source of freelance employment for local Equity members.

The initiative urged Newham council to urgently invest £100k to preserve the venue for the borough. Although they did not receive any public funding, Applecart Arts claims to have contributed £1.2m to the local economy in the past two years, in addition to investing £70,000 into the restoration of Passmore Edwards Library in Newham.

However, after the council did not intervene, on New Year’s Day, the trustees of Applecart Arts published a statement on their website declaring the closure of the venue:

“With heavy hearts, we announce the closure of Applecart Arts. After years of functioning as a vibrant center for creativity, storytelling, and community engagement, we are forced to bid farewell. This choice comes despite all efforts to keep the organization alive, including the incredible support from our patrons, artists, and allies.

The shutdown of Applecart Arts highlights the most recent small venue to close, part of a concerning trend throughout the UK. Equity will persist in advocating for the preservation of these significant small venues, which provide crucial employment opportunities for many of our members and ensure access to the arts for local communities nationwide.

A spokesperson for Equity stated, “We regret to announce the closure of Applecart Arts. This represents a significant loss for both the local and creative community and reflects myopic thinking from Newham Council. We will continue to strive to safeguard small venues across the UK, as they require all of our support now more than ever.”
