The young/subadult dolphin, which was accompanied by an adult dolphin, was initially reported to the DOC hotline on 29 December.

Kirsty Prior, DOC Operations Manager, states that the team found the dolphin and its partner at 12:50 pm yesterday.

“The disentanglement crew managed to secure a working line using grapnel and floats on the creature, enabling them to draw the dolphin closer to the vessel and carefully utilize specialized knives to release it by 1:54 pm.

“We observed the area for multiple hours and can confirm that the dolphin is free from entanglement and swimming robustly.

“It will likely require time to recuperate and rest before departing the vicinity. Please afford the dolphins adequate space during this period.

“We extend our gratitude to everyone who alerted the hotline; the community played a crucial role in assisting our team in achieving success,” remarks Kirsty.

Jocelin Friend from Te Kawerau ā Maki expressively accepted the invitation to be aboard the vessel and witness the disentanglement firsthand.

“Te Wai Roa ō Kahu and Rangitōpuni awa are our ancestral waterways. Our responsibility as kaitiaki is to ensure our taonga species are cared for with the utmost respect.

“I was impressed by how collaboratively and respectfully the team worked under tikanga Māori to safely release the dolphin,” states Jocelin.

A reminder for everyone to remain alert on the water, maintain their distance from marine mammals, and report any sightings to 0800 DOC HOT (0800 36 24 68).
