BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) –This segment on The Three was funded and sponsored by The Arts Center of the Brazos Valley.
The lobby of The Arts Center features a new exhibit, highlighting the artistry of photographer Joel Kitchens.
This marks Kitchens’ inaugural solo exhibit, and he mentioned it feels like a dream realized.
“It’s a really significant occasion,” Kitchens stated. “I have displayed work with the Visual Art Society at some of their exhibitions over the past few years, but this is the first one that’s exclusively mine.”
He shared that his enthusiasm for photography ignited during his final year of college when he opted to take a basic photography class as part of his art credits.
He remarked that the course introduced him to the basics of darkroom work, which he quickly fell in love with.
“When you watch a print emerge in the tray of developing solutions, that’s pure magic. It never fails to amaze,” Kitchens described.
He revealed that his residence includes a darkroom where he has been practicing for approximately 20 years.
Kitchens specializes in large format photography, which entails working with larger negatives that measure 4×5.
“My two preferred subjects are sacred architecture and landscapes,” Kitchens noted.
The exhibit titled “Where So Ever Things Are Beautiful: Travels Hither and Yon” is open for viewing until March 6.
