Winter weather in Michigan is unpredictable, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is encouraging everyone to prioritize safety while partaking in the season’s chilly adventures.

The DNR recommended that outdoor lovers prepare by layering their clothing, monitoring weather and road conditions, and carrying necessary safety equipment such as flashlights and ice picks.

Sgt. Jason Becker from the DNR Law Enforcement Division noted that it is equally crucial to stay hydrated and avoid going out alone whenever possible. He shared a potentially life-saving suggestion:

“Inform someone about your planned whereabouts and around what time you expect to return,” Becker advised. “If something were to occur, we would know where to begin the search or be aware that you are missing. We constantly remind individuals, ‘Travel with a companion,’ particularly regarding snowmobiling since it tends to be far from populated areas.”

Becker also underscored the importance of having a two-way communication device that functions in remote locations and conducting an honest evaluation of your health. If you feel unwell, it’s best to remain at home.

In Michigan, data shows that snowmobiling and hypothermia are among the top causes of injury or fatality in winter recreational incidents. Additionally, falling through ice, particularly during ice fishing, presents a serious danger. In 2019, there were 65 deaths due to 54 ice-related incidents.

Becker highlighted a vital saying from the DNR: No ice is safe ice.

“Always carry an ice pick so that if you do fall through, you have a means to gain some grip in the ice to pull yourself back up out of the water,” Becker urged. “Ensure you have a tool to create a hole in the ice, to assess its thickness, and continue to check it regularly.”

He further noted that alcohol consumption plays a significant role in numerous accidents during recreational activities.
