UConn’s Game Day Showdown: Xavier Storms into Hartford This Wednesday!

STORRS, Conn. – The seventh-ranked UConn women’s basketball squad (13-2, 4-0 BIG EAST) faces off against Xavier (5-9, 0-3) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the XL Center. The matchup will be broadcast on SNY and the UConn Sports Network from Learfield (The River 105.9).

On Wednesday, UConn will commemorate Pride Night to recognize the LGBTQ+ community. The Hartford Gay Men’s Chorus will perform the national anthem, and the team will don special shooting apparel. UConn’s Rainbow Center will set up a booth at the top of Section 124.

UConn outperforms BIG EAST adversaries by an average of +31.0 points per contest. The Huskies lead the league in scoring offense, scoring defense, scoring margin, field goal percentage, and assists per game.

Freshman Sarah Strong netted 21 points to guide UConn past Villanova, 83-52, last Sunday. Redshirt senior Paige Bueckers contributed 15 points along with a season-high nine assists, while sophomore KK Arnold achieved her second consecutive double-digit scoring game with 15 points.

Historically, UConn holds an 8-0 record against Xavier. This marks the sole encounter between the two teams this season, as UConn faces both Xavier and Butler only once each.

The Huskies dominated the paint against the Wildcats, outscoring them 48-8. UConn registered a season-high 30 assists on 35 successful field goals, highlighted by Bueckers’ nine assists.

Xavier was defeated by DePaul, 65-60, last Thursday. In this season, Meri Kanerva leads Xavier with an average of 11.2 points per game. Head coach Billi Chambers is in her second year at the helm of Xavier.
