Could you share a bit about your background and your recent photographic journey over the past 5-6 years?

As long as I can recall, I’ve had an affinity for untamed environments, and photography is my means of connecting more profoundly with these locations. The art of photography compels one to pause, observe intently, and wait for moments to unfold. With my camera, I find myself revisiting locations multiple times, and each visit reveals something different.

In the past decade, I’ve almost worked full-time as a professional wilderness guide and photography educator, making it essential to link others with natural wonders. This role is immensely fulfilling, and observing how others interpret their wilderness adventures has enriched my own artistic journey.



What drew you to photography and specifically to the realm of nature photography?

I’ve been incredibly lucky to have numerous remarkable encounters in nature, and photography acts as my journal and repository of memories. With a background in biology, photography also allows me to engage others with scientific concepts, illustrating why science and stewardship of our planet is essential.

What are your aspirations for your photography in the next 5-6 years?

Recently, I’ve concentrated on storytelling. Capturing a project that is technically perfect or one with inherent beauty is significant, but I find myself most intrigued by the emotional resonance of an image and its capacity to provoke reflection. I have a keen interest in the bond between humanity and nature. This relationship is profoundly important yet increasingly complex. We require wild spaces. Though we might not always believe so, we indeed do.

Many photographers aspire to establish a career in photography. What do you consider to be a defining moment in your path that led you to become a professional?

Reflecting on the past, it appears to be a case of “right place, right time,” although that might be a bit modest. I have long cherished both educating others and photography, yet I never envisioned seamlessly merging the two in such a fulfilling manner. Once I commenced directing workshops, everything aligned, and as is often the case with endeavors fueled by passion, it turned out exceptionally well. Subsequently, I was able to incorporate a touch of the scientific aspect as well, oscillating between my roles as a naturalist guide and photographer. I believe that being a naturalist—grasping ecology and behavior—deepens my photography, while my photographic pursuits evoke a greater curiosity about nature.

The gear alone does not define the photographer, yet it holds significant importance in wildlife photography. Which tools are essential for capturing award-winning nature and wildlife images?

Indeed, the finest camera is the one at your disposal, but the appropriate equipment in wildlife photography, in particular, markedly increases the likelihood of securing the perfect shot. Telephoto lenses are frequently indispensable for capturing intricate images of wildlife without causing disruption. No photograph justifies interfering with an animal’s natural routines! Nonetheless, I also strive to utilize wider lenses to portray my subject as a smaller part of its habitat. Both approaches can be crucial for illustrating the complete narrative.
