Hannah Howell triumphed in two individual events and collaborated with Brynn Warriner, Aleece Greenley, and Allison Grosvenor to clinch the final event, leading Elk Lake to a 98-84 victory over Scranton Prep on Wednesday evening in the season’s most awaited Lackawanna League girls swim meet.
Elk Lake advanced to 4-0, bringing Scranton Prep’s dual-meet winning streak to a halt at 73 consecutive victories.
“Being part of such an exceptional team is incredible,” Howell, a returning All-Region swimmer, expressed. “We were close last season, and to kick off my senior year with a bang is truly remarkable.”
Howell achieved victory in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2 minutes, 13.78 seconds, just outpacing Scranton Prep’s Sophia Galko, also an All-Region swimmer from the prior season, and she seized the 500 freestyle in 6:06.62.
Elk Lake secured significant points in diving, a category not contested during last season’s 109-61 defeat to the Classics. Lily Rauch clinched first place with a score of 187.95, Saddie Smith placed second (186.75), while Taylor States took third (131.90).
The Lady Warriors clinched overall triumph with a victory in the 400 free relay, completing the event in 4:05.60. Scranton Prep finished in second place with a time of 4:08.12.
“All I had to do was give it my all, and that’s exactly what everyone on the team did,” Howell stated. “We went for it.
“The reaction after our win was phenomenal. We were all ecstatic. We defeated Abington Heights last year and were competitive against Scranton Prep, so this win had us all beaming.”
Scranton Prep showcased its usual outstanding performances from a talented roster of swimmers, yet could not surpass Elk Lake’s depth and dominance in diving.
Eva Kaszuba emerged victorious in both the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke; Rebecca Oakes claimed the 50 free and the 100 free; Galko won the 100 fly; Marin Purcell took the 100 back; and the Classics secured victories in both the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay.
“Firstly, I’d like to commend the Elk Lake swimmers and their coaching staff,” remarked Scranton Prep coach Colin Manley. “Their girls swam exceptionally fast and infused the meet with tremendous energy. I hope they take immense pride in their achievement tonight. I am quite proud of how our girls performed today. Coming into the meet, we knew we were short-handed and starting with a deficit without diving. The girls banded together, resulting in some stellar races but ultimately fell short.
“We can view this as motivation to enhance ourselves for the remainder of the season.”
Scranton Prep’s last dual-meet loss was against Delaware Valley on February 8, 2016.
“Although the winning streak has ended, it remains a source of pride and accomplishment for the Classics and the Prep community,” Manley added. “It symbolizes a decade of dedication and community built by countless athletes, families, and coaches. I am grateful to have shared in that experience with such wonderful people.
