For Julie Stapen, photography transcends mere employment—it’s a lifelong enthusiasm. Her adventure commenced in fifth grade when she received her inaugural camera and enrolled in every available photography class. This initial zeal propelled her to major in visual arts during college, where she centered her senior thesis on photography, dedicated a summer to the art scene at the School of Art Centers International in Florence, and obtained a master’s degree in Studio Art through NYU and the International Center of Photography (ICP). Along her journey, she also attained certification in art education and acquired experience assisting fashion and documentary photographers prior to joining the New York Post in 2003, where she captured features for its Sunday publication.

Julie formally inaugurated Julie Stapen Photography in 2010 after shifting her focus to her expanding family while chasing her passion for freezing life’s most unforgettable moments. “It felt like the natural course for where I was in my life,” Julie conveys. “I aimed to be with my little ones for as much time as possible while continuing to photograph a wide array of subjects.”

From family gatherings and weddings to bar and bat mitzvahs, corporate affairs and branding, along with senior portraits, Julie’s portfolio is as varied as her artistic history. Her artistry is characterized by her skill in making her subjects feel at ease and connected, encapsulating authentic moments while having an eye for beauty, portraying individuals in the manner they wish to be represented. Recognized for her expertise in natural lighting—particularly her distinctive backlit compositions—Julie produces timeless photographs that narrate a story. “With each session, I don’t view it merely as taking pictures, but as narrating a story,” she elaborates. “There’s an abundance that contributes to crafting a remarkable photo, and for me, all of these elements seamlessly align.”

Julie’s editing approach, entrenched in her foundation of film photography, showcases her dedication to genuineness. She captures all in-camera, utilizing Lightroom to refine her images with the same meticulousness she would have applied in a darkroom.

Julie moved from NYC to Nyack in 2010 with her spouse and their 2-year-old son. Since that time, she has welcomed three daughters and embraced the lively, diverse community. Over the years, Julie has had the honor of photographing numerous local families and businesses, encapsulating the distinctive essence of Nyack. “Nyack is my family’s sanctuary, and the array of stunning locations and remarkable individuals here consistently inspires me,” she shares.

Documenting the growth and milestones of families in the community has held particular significance for her—a testament to the trust and bond she has nurtured within the neighborhood. Julie is currently pursuing the establishment of a studio space to supplement her outdoor and event photography. The studio will not only enable her to expand her artistic offerings but also provide a venue for community events and photography workshops—merging her passion for teaching with her creative pursuit.

Julie’s enthusiasm for her craft radiates through her commitment to capturing significant, intimate memories. “My heart is enriched with every session,” she states. “Being a photographer transcends business for me—it’s one of my most profound passions.”
