Two American astronauts who have been stranded for months at the International Space Station (ISS) stated on Wednesday that they have an ample food supply, are not encountering a laundry dilemma, and do not yet feel like castaways.

Experienced astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams came to the ISS in June on Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, originally intending to stay for merely eight days in the celestial laboratory.

However, issues with the Starliner’s propulsion system led NASA to modify the plans, with a return flight now set for late March at the earliest.

Ms. Williams expressed that morale was still high in spite of the unanticipated extended duration in space.

“It’s been an absolute pleasure to be working up here,” he remarked during a conversation with NASA representatives.

“It doesn’t feel like we’re abandoned,” he continued. “Ultimately, we want to go home since we left our families a while ago, but we have a significant amount to accomplish while we’re up here.”

Wilmore chuckled while providing reassurances about the food supply.

“We’re well-fed,” he noted.

The laundry needs are also not comparable to those on Earth, he clarified.

“Clothing feels loose up here. It’s different from Earth where you perspire and it becomes unpleasant. I mean, they fit loosely. Hence, you can wear items honestly for weeks without any discomfort at all,” he explained.

After the propulsion issues arose, NASA eventually opted to return the spacecraft to Earth without its crew and to bring the two stranded astronauts back with the SpaceX Crew-9 members.

Two astronauts from Crew-9 reached the ISS aboard a Dragon spacecraft in late September, leaving two vacant seats for Wilmore and Williams. The intention was for all four to return home in February 2025.

However, the return was delayed last month when NASA announced that Crew-10, which would relieve Crew-9 and the stranded duo, would now launch no sooner than March 2025, meaning both teams would remain onboard for a “handover period.”

According to those schedules, Wilmore and Williams are expected to spend over nine months in space.

“When we return home, we’ll have numerous tales to share,” Williams remarked.
