Jim Meehan’s passion for photography ignited in the 1990s.

He acquired his first film camera to enter a school photography competition, and the Pittsburgh native unearthed a fervor for capturing the beauty of his surroundings.

Meehan began by photographing landscapes and events, fueled by his enthusiasm for travel, artistry, and the great outdoors. One thing is undeniable: the self-taught photographer possesses a fondness for vivid colors, stark contrasts, dramatic lighting, and abstract compositions.

A complimentary reception featuring Meehan’s creations will occur from 6 to 8 p.m. on Jan. 11 at the Monroeville Public Library’s Gallery Space, 4000 Gateway Campus Blvd. Entitled “A Distinct Perspective,” the exhibit illustrates how Meehan captures images and offers a fresh perspective on daily life.

Visitors will have the opportunity to buy original, framed artworks and matted prints. Meehan’s annual, Pittsburgh-themed calendar—which includes pieces from his exhibition—will be available for $30. Named “Pittsburgh: A Distinct Perspective,” the calendar is printed on high-quality card stock with a matte finish.

Although Meehan’s beginnings lie in traditional landscapes and cityscapes, his approach is anything but standard. He frequently seeks out new vistas, sometimes employing drones for aerial photography and infrared techniques to seize landscapes in an entirely different illumination. He also revels in abstract art and street photography.

“My preferred images are those where I can effectively capture what initially caught my attention,” Meehan expressed. “The subject holds no significance as long as I can convey the emotion I experienced upon witnessing the scene or subject.” His photography has been showcased in NCAA sports, newspapers and magazines, museums, and in promotional materials. He also conducts private sessions including weddings, pet portraits, and senior photography.

Meehan was awarded the photography accolade at the Westmoreland Arts and Heritage Festival in 2023 and received an award of merit at this year’s Fred Rogers Fine Arts Juried Exhibition. He is a member of the Westmoreland Photographers Society and actively participates in galleries at the Latrobe Art Center.

Meehan employs portrait and event photography in his collaborations with nonprofit organizations – such as the Pittsburgh NFL Flag Football League in Penn Hills, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and various parks and nature preserves – to help narrate their significant stories through his perspective.

“Certain events necessitate action shots, while others seek intimate photographs of an individual or small group, such as the costumes created by children in the Odyssey of the Mind competition,” he remarked.

Meehan resides with his spouse, Morgan, whom he encountered 19 years ago on the second day of college at the University of Pittsburgh. The couple lives in the Plum area with their dog, Ziggy.

“Morgan critiques much of my work and will even select a few images for me to submit to juried exhibitions,” Meehan stated. “She has a remarkable eye for detail.”

The exhibit will be open until Jan. 27. For further information regarding Meehan’s photography, visit jmvisualarts.com or contact him at [email protected].
