Residents eager to recycle their Christmas trees are reminded to exclusively drop them off at official collection locations after numerous trees were discarded throughout the city.
We have established 23 recycling sites where residents may leave their trees for our personnel to gather and compost.
These locations will remain operational until 31 January, providing ample time for individuals to bring their trees to one of them if they have a natural tree and have not yet disposed of it.
Nevertheless, many trees have been abandoned at non-collection sites, putting extra pressure on our broader waste management services and placing the owner at risk of receiving a fine for illegal dumping.
Councillor Tim Rowkins, Cabinet member for Net Zero and Environmental Services, stated: “It has been fantastic to witness so many individuals recycling their Christmas trees, and we have seen significant demand at all our official sites.
“We express our gratitude to everyone who has brought their tree to one of these sites, but I urge those who have yet to dispose of their tree to utilize only these locations and refrain from leaving them elsewhere.
“We have a collection timetable for the authorized sites, with additional resources in place to ensure they remain as clear as possible and address the high demand.”
Councillor Rowkins added: “However, we have also observed many trees abandoned on the roadside, next to shared bins, or in public parks and open areas.
“Should we need to redirect staff to clear trees from these locations on an unscheduled basis, those staff will be unable to perform their regular duties of keeping the city clean, and in most cases, this will mean the trees go unrecycled.
“This can also hinder the accessibility of sidewalks near our communal bins and potentially create issues for both drivers and pedestrians.
“We are truly eager to assist in recycling as many real Christmas trees as possible, but we need residents to do their part by delivering them to the appropriate sites.”
Residents may find their closest Christmas tree collection site on our website: Christmas tree recycling points | Brighton & Hove City Council.
They can also be brought to the Household Waste Recycling Centres.
Real trees can also be placed inside garden waste collection bins if residents are enrolled in the service.
