USC Upstate Shines Bright as U.S. Dept. of Education’s National Honoree!

The University of South Carolina Upstate has been distinguished as one of six awardees of the U.S. Department of Education’s inaugural Postsecondary Success Recognition Program (PSRP). This initiative showcases higher education institutions that excel in fostering equitable access, nurturing student achievement, and equipping graduates for careers that promote economic advancement. Initiated in April 2024 by U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona, PSRP seeks to honor institutions that cater to underserved demographics while enhancing student accomplishment and workforce preparation.

USC Upstate’s dedication to equitable student outcomes is reinforced by its demographics: 46% of students are underrepresented students of color, and 50% are recipients of Pell Grants. The institution is notable for programs such as its centralized advising system and University College, which offers comprehensive student support, along with its Re: Degree Spartanburg initiative, aimed at re-engaging local adults to finalize their degrees.

“This accolade is a reflection of the innovative character and collaborative efforts of the USC Upstate community,” remarked Dr. Bennie L. Harris, chancellor of USC Upstate. “We make it our mission daily to cultivate an encouraging environment where learners from diverse backgrounds can thrive academically, evolve personally, and fulfil their aspirations. Being recognized by the U.S. Department of Education validates our commitment to equity, opportunity, and excellence.”

The selection procedure for PSRP awardees was intensely competitive. The Department of Education employed publicly accessible data to assess over 200 institutions based on equitable access, student success, and post-graduation achievements. Following a thorough application and interview process, USC Upstate was selected for its inventive approach to student support and success methodologies.

Dr. Kimberly Purdy, Vice Chancellor for Student Success and Institutional Effectiveness, along with her team, played a critical role in USC Upstate’s recognition. “I’m elated that the commitment of our faculty, staff, and administration has received national acknowledgment through this DOE award, which highlights our dedication to student success and economic progression,” stated Dr. Purdy. “We possess a remarkable community at Upstate, characterized by an innovative mindset that propels us to test and tailor evidence-based retention strategies to our campus, establishing a unique environment where all students have the opportunity to succeed. This recognition underscores the collaborative endeavors across every division on campus to cultivate an inclusive and supportive educational atmosphere. I hope this acknowledgment raises awareness about the remarkable happenings at Upstate.”

Dr. Bennie Harris and Dr. Kimberly Purdy will participate with Secretary Miguel Cardona and other educational leaders in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 14, 2025, for a celebratory event honoring this year’s PSRP awardees.
