William Richards (1917–2004) produced stunning collections of abstract photographs, although the majority of his highly prosperous career was primarily commercial rather than artistic. Richards acquired photography and industrial design skills as a young student in New York City. Following his service in World War II and relocating to Cleveland, Ohio in the late 1940s, he established Richards Studios as a company focusing on advertising and visual communications. Through his endeavors, he emerged as one of the early practitioners of color photography, employing it to create visuals that familiarized consumers with various new technologies across manufacturing, transportation, electronics, and more.
