Secretary Blinken convened a meeting today with Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas, French Director for the Middle East and North Africa Anne Grillo, and German Political Director Günter Sautter. The participants deliberated on the conditions in Syria following the collapse of the Assad regime and explored strategies to assist the Syrian populace in seizing this chance to cultivate a brighter future. They emphasized the necessity for all parties in Syria to honor human rights, adhere to international humanitarian law, prevent Syria from becoming a threat to neighboring countries or a haven for terrorism, and take all measures to safeguard civilians, including members of minority communities. The ministers also shared perspectives on the enforcement of the ceasefire in Lebanon, highlighting the urgency of ongoing support for the Lebanese Armed Forces. They further talked about the importance of concluding the conflict in Gaza, securing the release of all hostages, and enhancing humanitarian aid.
