CLEVELAND, OH – The Calvin men’s swimming and diving squad commenced second semester competition with a visit to Division I Cleveland State University Friday afternoon. The Knights were outmatched in the dual meet 192-102 but showcased several impressive performances.

Senior Will Goodpaster (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton HS) secured second position on the one-meter (263.25) and three-meter (232.80) diving boards.

Senior David Bajwa (Bethesda./The Heights School) glided to victory in the 100 backstroke (50.05) while claiming second in the 200 backstroke (1:53.32). Junior Jacob Ziegler (Toledo, Oh./St. John’s Jesuit) finished fourth in the 200 backstroke (1:56.62).

In the 100 butterfly, senior Logan Campbell (Yorkville, Il./Yorkville HS) achieved a win (48.97) while freshman Andrew Taulbee (Reynoldsburg, Oh./Reynoldsburg HS) came in fourth (51.33). Campbell also added a third-place performance in the 100 backstroke (51.21).

Junior Timothy Hays (Arlington, Il./Mt. Prospect HS) triumphed in the 200 butterfly (1:51.52) while finishing second in the 200 IM (1:50.75).

Junior Charles Platt (Downers Grove, Il./Downers Grove South HS) placed second in the 200 freestyle (1:40.45) and 100 freestyle (45.65). Senior Josh Seidelman (Northville, Mich./Northville HS) was second in the 50 freestyle (20.94) while graduate student Vlad Molin (Rolling Meadows Il.//Rolling Meadows HS) secured fifth (21.12). Molin also achieved fourth in the 100 freestyle (46.83).

Junior Caleb Gemmen (Mentor, Oh./Hone School) finished third in the 200 breaststroke (2:05.04) and fourth in the 100 breaststroke (56.24).

Calvin took the second and third spots in the 500 freestyle with sophomore Ryan Halberg (Novi, Mich./Northville HS) placing second (4:48.30) and sophomore Andrew Stimpert (Normal, Il./Normal HS) finishing third (4:48.76). Halberg also claimed fourth in the 1000 freestyle (9:58.41). Molin, Seidelman, and Platt secured second with a time of 3:03.28.

COACHES COMMENT: “We performed well against Division I opponents tonight,” stated Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. “We had several commendable victories and robust performances following a week of training in Florida. We anticipate a significant day of competition ahead tomorrow and look forward to the chance.”

NEXT UP: The Knights will refocus their efforts towards a triangular dual meet at Denison University, which will also feature Carnegie Mellon. All three teams hold national rankings in Division III; Denison is ranked second, Carnegie Mellon is eighth, and Calvin is ninth. The competition is set to commence at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Granville, Ohio.
