The English Undergraduate Travel Grant facilitates students’ attendance at a professional conference or development event by offering financial assistance from the English department. This grant is available solely through application, on a first-come, first-served basis, throughout the academic year, until the maximum number of recipients (4/year) is achieved.

Students are limited to one travel grant per academic year and a maximum of two throughout their undergraduate career. Consequently, we have established a time frame from Sept. 1st to Aug. 31st to align with the academic calendar.

Eligibility

  • Must be an undergraduate English major at the time of application
    • Only Juniors or Seniors
    • Must be an enrolled student. Seniors are ineligible to request these funds after graduating.
  • The conference you apply to must be academically or professionally oriented
  • No graduate students are permitted to apply
  • Must maintain good academic standing
  • Conference must take place within the US

Funding Information

  • Eligible expenses include:
    • Conference registration fees
    • Travel costs (e.g., airfare, mileage, rideshares)
    • Accommodation
    • Meals
    • Ineligible expenses:
      • Any costs not directly associated with attending the conference

Application Process

To obtain funding, students must provide the necessary documentation prior to attending the conference and upon their return. Students must submit their application one academic term prior to the conference they plan to attend (For example, if attending a conference in Winter Quarter, the application should be submitted during Autumn Quarter)

Students can access the application here

The application requires

  • Name, SUID, current academic year
  • Conference name, date, and website link
  • A written statement explaining how the selected conference relates to their English major
  • A budget detailing primary categories of expenses (e.g., flight, lodging, registration fee, meal expenses). The maximum proposed budget is $1000. *Funding is limited, so please consider carefully the budget you submit

Post-Conference Expectations

Students are required to compose a 1-2 page summary of the conference that may be published on the website for the public. This summary should cover what they gained from the event and how it ties back to their English major (e.g. specific courses and/or theories/methodologies acquired in the major)
