The Steam Deck portable gaming PC now provides an option between LCD or AMOLED displays. But what if you currently possess an LCD model and aspire to enhance it to an AMOLED screen? Officially, your sole alternative is to acquire a new handheld. Unofficially, however? There exists another possibility.

DeckSight is conducting a crowdfunding initiative for a 1080p AMOLED display intended as a direct substitute for the LCD screen in the Steam Deck. Not only will this provide more vibrant colors, but it will also elevate the display resolution from (the Steam Deck’s native displays are 1280 x 800 pixels).

In further recent technology updates from across the internet, the Orange Pi Neo handheld gaming PC featuring a Linux-based operating system has experienced delays… but it is now anticipated to ship shortly. Microsoft is crafting an interface to enhance Windows’ functionality on handheld gaming PCs. Additionally, NVIDIA is broadening its GeForce NOW game streaming service to include support for the Steam Deck, Meta Quest 3/3S, and Apple Vision Pro.

DeckSight features a 1080p AMOLED display panel designed as a direct replacement for the entry-level Steam Deck’s LCD screen. Available in $130 glossy and $140 anti-glare versions, it is currently in crowdfunding and is expected to ship by May/June 2025. However, you will need to install a modified BIOS to utilize the new display, and the DeckSight developers may have to continue releasing updates in response to OTA updates from Valve. 

This project is not by the same team who provided the DeckHD a few years back – that kit allows for the upgrade of a Steam Deck display but consists of a 1920 x 1200 pixel IPS LCD screen instead of a 1920 x 1080 pixel AMOLED display.
