Photo of the Day – Snowshoe’s FOOT OF SNOW recorded in the past 24 hours earns the POD today. THAT, my friends, is what 12″ of fresh snow appears like the following morning.

Here is another Noteworthy Mention POD:

Sunday, January 12, 2025

The recent string of numerous snow storms has now calmed down, with just a little residual, gentle, snow falling near Canaan Valley Resort, Timberline Mountain, and Wisp Resort in Maryland. Since the dawn of January 1, 2025, 46.5″ of snow has accumulated at the West Virginia ski resorts. (Shawn Cassell from Snowshoe consistently gives our SkiSoutheast team credit for ensuring excellent conditions at the mountain during these holiday and SkiSoutheast Summit weekends.) Snowshoe reports that over FIVE FEET of snow has been recorded since SkiSoutheast departed from Snowshoe at 9am on January 1st. Haha.

It seems this serves as yet another illustration.

It’s just good MOJO to have faith, right?!

Grab Your Coffee; Sit Back and Let’s Take a Sunday Stroll.

Speaking of snow, Canaan Valley Resort and Timberline Mountain received another 2.1″ of snow in the last 24 hours. Ladies and gentlemen, that marks TWELVE CONSECUTIVE DAYS of substantial snowfall.

By the way, it SNOWED ALL DAY on Saturday, and some of it was considerable. Most ski resorts reported between 1″-2″ for the day, predominantly featuring a misty, fine type of snow.

Snowshoe was hit hard on Saturday and is reporting 12″ of new snowfall in the past 24 hours, whereas the other WV resorts “only” received 2-3″. These instances occur. They are uncommon, but they happen. I texted Shawn Cassell of Snowshoe this morning for confirmation, and he shared,

“To be honest, I think 12″ is modest. We had multiple reports of 15″ around the mountain.”

He also added, “I was parked at Silver Creek for a short while yesterday, and it snowed 6″ on my truck in that period.”

This is the appearance of 12″ of snow, and remember that almost FIVE FEET of snow has fallen there since January 1st. CRAZY. EPIC!

AND SUGAR MOUNTAIN HAD A GLITCH???

Sugar Mountain Resort is ALSO claiming 12″ of snow in the last 24 hours and 15″ from the two-day storm. This information is, quite simply, inaccurate. If you are traveling to Sugar expecting to encounter 15″ of snow on the ground, you may be let down.

As per NOAA’s Avery station records, Beech experienced just a little more than Sugar with 8″ officially over the two days… while Sugar, Banner Elk, and Seven Devils’ higher elevations perhaps received 7″. Not 15″. Sugar’s total for the season (officially) stands at 39.5″ (which is still impressive) but not the 53″ being claimed.

For the data enthusiasts, feel free to click the link below and select each day since November 1st if you desire, and you can view season snowfall totals. (Note: You will need to visit each day and compile the totals from Nov 1st.)

CHECK THE SNOW REPORT to find out how much new snow has accumulated where, and for all the extra slopes and trails available for your Sunday Funday enjoyment.

SOME SHARES:

I have frequently mentioned that SNOW is considered “WHITE GOLD” regarding marketing value for ski resorts and this website. I have regrettably neglected to check our statistics since the storms arrived in rapid succession. However, this morning I noticed that the camera feeds were somewhat sluggish, so I checked Google Analytics and observed that we experienced several days recently where our traffic surpassed 130,000 to 142,000 daily. At these figures, we will surpass our previous record season of traffic to SkiSoutheast.com and ResortCams.com.

Unless I become lazy later this morning, I plan to ski at Sugar Mountain today. I’ll be spending time with a friend and Snow property owner, as well as my daughter and her boyfriend. If you happen to be there, feel free to find me. I will be wearing a garnet/red Spyder jacket and have SkiSoutheast stickers on my helmet. I’ll bring along some stickers to share as well.
