The Pitt men’s and women’s swimming and diving squads launched their initial tri-meet of the season during a two-day competition against George Washington and West Virginia. The events commenced on Friday with the platform diving finals and proceeded on Saturday with the three-meter springboard and swimming competitions.

Platform dive

The Panthers commenced with vigor, as seniors Cameron Cash and Jess Vega secured first-place finishes in the platform events on Friday. Cash recorded a remarkable score of 338.60, while Vega claimed her initial victory of the season with 263.25.

In the men’s platform category, Pitt accomplished a one-two finish, with fifth-year Jackson Salisbury taking the second spot. On the women’s side, sophomore Mariana Osorio Mendoza scored 242.65 to secure third place.

Three-meter springboard

Pitt diving continued to showcase their prowess on Saturday morning, sweeping the men’s three-meter springboard podium. Cash again led the pack with a score of 356.80, followed by first-year Noah Bernard and sophomore Chase Marafioto.

“This is my eighth season, and we’ve made significant progress,” Pitt head diving coach Katie Kasprzak remarked. “Demonstrating our depth is truly encouraging and positive … it positions us well for the coming months as we anticipate ACCs and NCAAs.”

In the women’s three-meter, Pitt junior Rachel Dickerson recorded 314.90 to lead the standings. George Washington junior Olivia Paquette claimed second, hindering the Panthers from a top-three finish in both the men’s and women’s three-meter with Mendoza and first-year Jocelyn Brooks securing third and fourth position respectively.

Swimming

The Panthers concluded the weekend with an impressive display in the pool. The women’s team triumphed over West Virginia 240-57 and George Washington 215.5-84.5 — marking their fifth consecutive victory.

The men’s team achieved victory over West Virginia 227-70 and George Washington 210.5-89.5. Pitt excelled with 21 event victories on Saturday, including 17 individual wins.

Senior Max Matteazzi spearheaded the efforts, securing triumphs in three individual events — the men’s 1000 freestyle, 200 Breaststroke, and the 200 IM. “It’s great to race at home. I enjoy competing for the school … I can feel the crowd here cheering, and it motivates us to perform at our best,” Matteazzi stated.

Matteazzi surged to victory, winning each race by a margin of no less than 1.3 seconds, even though he swam the 1000 meters for the first occasion.

Pitt upheld its momentum in the relays, prevailing in all four events. Both the men and women commenced the racing day by clinching both 200 medley relays — finishing first and second in each — followed by stylish victories in both 200 freestyle relays to conclude the day.

Avery Kudlac was a highlight performer on Saturday, achieving wins in the women’s 200 butterfly with a time of 1:59.44 and the 100 freestyle clocking 49.40 before anchoring the winning women’s 200 freestyle relay.

Pitt celebrated one-two-three finishes in four individual events — women’s 100 backstroke, women’s 100 breaststroke, men’s 100 breaststroke, and women’s 100 freestyle. The team also achieved a one-two finish in seven additional events.

Up next, the Panthers head back to Texas to participate in a tri-meet against SMU and Utah in Dallas on Jan. 25.
