ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Four participants of the Eastern Michigan University tennis team commenced the 2025 spring agenda by contending against formidable adversaries at the 2025 University of Michigan Invitational, held Jan. 10-12, as the Eagles competed against multiple players ranked nationally. The Eagles faced off against teams from No. 8 Michigan, No. 15 Ohio State University, and Texas Tech University just a week prior to starting dual play.
“This weekend presented a fantastic opportunity for our program, and I am extremely proud of how our players represented us,” said Head Coach Ryan Kucera. “Competing against three sets of nationally acknowledged opponents was an incredible experience, and each player showcased significant moments and progress. We enhanced our performance as we continued and learned extensively from the matches. This will benefit us as we head into our first home contest next weekend.”
Although the Eagles could not achieve a win, they did acquire invaluable experience moving into the dual season, notably Daniella Shved (Holon, Israel/Ort Holon), a two-time All-Mid-American Conference honoree, who matched up against a duo of nationally ranked singles players and one nationally ranked doubles team while partnering with Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland/Sopocka (Sopot) Tennis Academy/Wayne State). In her singles matches, Shved was defeated by No. 18 Piper Charney (Michigan), 6-2, 6-3, and then fell in a three-set contest to No. 84 Sydni Ratliff (Ohio State), 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. She concluded the weekend with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat against Mariia Hlahola (Texas Tech). In doubles matchups, Shved and Komar encountered No. 57 Hlahola and Hailey Murphy (TTU) and were defeated, 6-2, on the event’s opening day.
Freshman Iva Daneva (Kavadarci, North Macedonia/DSU Sportska Akademija) faced her first nationally ranked opponent in No. 40 Lily Jones (UM), going down 6-0, 6-2. Daneva and Hazmukova partnered to compete in three doubles matches, starting the weekend against No. 33 Andreea Lily and Jermine Sherif (TTU), but lost to the nationally-ranked duo, 6-1.

The Eagles will begin their 2025 spring dual season on Saturday, Jan. 18, with a home doubleheader versus Ferris State University at the Chippewa Club in Ypsilanti.
