HUDSON — Competing as a distance swimmer necessitates a particular type of athlete.
Coaches recognized early on that Hudson’s Ivan Reber possessed that mentality.
“It truly originates from my club mentors,” Reber expressed. “They noticed quite early that I excelled in endurance and longer workouts during practice. One of them even called my mother, stating, ‘This kid has a distance attitude.’ It’s undeniably demanding, but I enjoy it.”
Hudson coach Matt Davis mentioned that accepting that challenge is what distinguishes Reber.
“You can be an exceptional swimmer, but if you don’t take pleasure in that form of discomfort, you’ll never excel at it,” Davis stated. “Nobody really enjoys training, yet he has done an excellent job pushing himself. I am eager to see what he can achieve by season’s end.”
Reber has also embraced the heritage of Hudson distance swimming. He requested to follow the same training regimen as Hudson All-Ohioans Caleb Tuckerman and Vittorio Cappabianca, expressing a wish to emulate their strides.
“It’s a wonderful community,” Reber elaborated. “We put in significant effort at practice and, on competition days, we stay focused because we have many yards to cover. Winning the district title and making an impression at states is extremely crucial to me. I even spoke to Matt at the year’s start, expressing, ‘I want to uphold that legacy.'”
“Ivan has embraced the role of the leader among our distance swimmers, as well as amongst our team,” Davis remarked. “We’ve been fortunate over the years to have some outstanding distance competitors. Many exceptional ones have passed the baton, and Ivan is kind of the next in line.”
Last season, Reber battled through health challenges to secure 21st place in the state for the 500-yard freestyle. This year, his goal is to reach the state podium and surpass his personal best of 4:42.75, which was established during his sophomore year.
While competing in the 500 during the postseason is a certainty for Reber, his second event remains undecided. Reber captured the Suburban League title in both the 500 and 200 freestyles.
Nevertheless, he intends to participate in the 200 individual medley at the Northeast Classic Saturday to assess how he feels.
“Perhaps it’s because I haven’t tried it, but I actually prefer the 200 IM,” Reber noted. “With that endurance factor, I can just sprint those strokes continuously. The 200 free can become quite exhausting after a time.”
In fact, both Reber and Davis are confident he will perform even better in college in longer distance events.
“When I transition to club season and college, I could go all the way up to the mile,” Reber mentioned. “I would like to reach 400 IM as well. It just seems to align with my strengths. A great portion of it is psychological. In the mile, there’s truly no other race like it. You’re swimming for 16 minutes at some pretty challenging speeds.”
Reber was born in the Columbus region but progressed through the HEAT program after relocating to Hudson in the second grade. His sister Lucy completed her studies at Hudson in 2022 and swam for the University of Kentucky.
Reber made a commitment to swim at Providence College in October. He maintains a 4.6 GPA at Hudson and plans to major in finance.
“I selected Providence because I really appreciate the coaching staff,” Reber stated. “I considered other institutions such as Villanova and a few Division III schools. Ultimately, I preferred the Division I environment along with the principles the school upholds.”
However, Reber makes it clear that his primary focus remains on the state meet in Canton.
“Numerous individuals have been inquiring, ‘Are you excited for college?'” he said. “I am genuinely just concentrating on this year. I believe I can achieve something substantial. I’ve had many discussions with Matt regarding it, and, of course, the objective is to be on the podium at states. My complete tapering meet will occur at state.”
