NEW YORK — A doorbell camera mounted on a home in Canada recorded unusual footage and sounds of a meteorite impacting the Earth as it landed on a couple’s walkway.
Upon returning home after an evening stroll in July, Laura Kelly and her partner were astonished to discover their pathway covered with dust and unusual debris, as reported by the Meteoritical Society, which shared the video along with its findings.
They reviewed their security footage and spotted something crashing against their entranceway, generating a plume of smoke and a crackling sound.
The couple reported their discovery to the University of Alberta’s Meteorite Reporting System, where curator Chris Herd analyzed samples of the debris to authenticate its extraterrestrial roots.
Meteorites are fragments of space rocks that reach Earth after withstanding a journey through its intense atmosphere. NASA indicates that approximately 48 tons (43,500 kilograms) of such debris hits Earth daily, though it is significantly more probable for them to fall into an ocean rather than land on a person’s doorstep.
These space rocks also illuminate the night sky as shooting stars during meteor showers that occur multiple times throughout the year.
This footage is thought to be unprecedented. While meteors have been recorded speeding through the sky, capturing the audible sound of an entire meteorite impact on video is exceedingly rare.
The meteorite, which was officially cataloged on Monday, was given the name Charlottetown, after the city in eastern Canada where it landed.
