For numerous years, Delaware students have participated in athletic contests on playing fields and in gymnasiums. Soon, students will engage in video game competitions while also honing skills that might be utilized in potential careers down the line.

The state’s newly launched K-12 scholastic esports initiative is not merely a gaming venture. The program aims to connect students’ interests with real-world learning, career exploration, and community engagement.

“Our goal is to unite the competitive aspect of esports with the educational side, focusing on inclusivity, school environment, and culture, along with college and career connections,” stated Alyssa Moore, an education associate for digital learning at the Delaware Department of Education.

“We’re encouraging students to explore their enthusiasm for esports and how it can link to potential job opportunities and preparations for those roles, as well as demonstrate connections to their work in other academic subjects.”

The program’s state-wide launch builds on the accomplishments of prior pilot projects, which established a base for its expansion. Between January and early April, students will take part in competitions and scrimmages, culminating in championship invitationals hosted by universities and colleges across the state.

Esports encompasses more than mere gaming, as Moore indicates; it also serves as a pathway to various career paths.

“There are numerous connections to STEM and computer science within esports, given its existence in the digital realm,” she noted. “Questions arise such as: How are these games constructed? How do we safeguard our information online? What role does cybersecurity play? What knowledge is required to assemble all these components to create a game?”

Through practical experience, students acquire essential skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, and creativity — competencies that are readily applicable to a wide array of industries.

“This exemplifies how we can bring students’ passions to fruition in school and connect them to their external interests, fostering real-world correlations between their education and future aspirations,” Moore expressed.
