(EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics squad triumphed in the Golden Girls’ Classic against Mid-American Conference rivals Ball State University and Northern Illinois University, as well as out-of-conference challenger Winona State University on Friday, Jan. 17, achieving a score of 195.125 within the George Gervin GameAbove Center.
 
Eastern surpassed its competitors with scores of 195.000 for Ball State, 193.275 for Northern Illinois, and 189.450 from Winona State. By overcoming these three institutions, it marks the first occasion that EMU has commenced with a 4-0 record in a season since at least 2003.
 
In addition to achieving their highest season-opening score since 2003 with a total of 194.925 against Bowling Green on Jan. 12, the Eagles subsequently recorded their top score of the season at 195.125 that Friday evening.
 
EMU concluded the event with seven personal records overall, including one on vault, two on bars, three on the beam, and one on floor.
 
How It Unfolded
Raisa Boris (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center) shone for Eastern Michigan, finishing with a season-high score of 39.125 to secure first place in the all-around division. She outperformed second-place finisher Hannah Ruthberg from Ball State, who recorded a score of 38.500 overall.
 
In vault, Eastern Michigan was spearheaded by Abby Brushwood (State College, Pa./State College Area), who achieved a season-high of 9.775 as the Eagles compiled an overall score of 48.550. The sophomore surpassed Alana Fisher (Athens, Ala./Alabama Connections Academy) and Genae Daniel (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike), who attained scores of 9.750 and 9.700, respectively.
 
On the uneven bars, Eastern Michigan had five gymnasts earn at least a 9.70, led by Boris, who posted a score of 9.825, equaling her season-best in that event. Close behind was Gwendelyn Cantu (Joilet, Ill./Providence Catholic) with a personal best of 9.775. Additionally, achieving scores of at least 9.70 were Keeley Kohler (Davison, Mich./Powers Catholic), Kyrie Lowe (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista), and  Ella Chemotti (Canton, Mich./Canton) with scores of 9.750, and 9.725 for the latter two. The Eagles concluded with 48.825 points on the uneven bars.
 
Following this, Eastern moved to the balance beam, amassing a team score of 48.775. Chemotti led with a season-best performance of 9.775. Trailing her was Katin Childress (Prosper, Texas/Prosper) with a score of 9.750. Boris, Lowe, and Fisher were the rest of the Eagles competing with scores of at least 9.7, with Boris and Fisher both scoring 9.725 and Lowe scoring 9.700.
 
To wrap up the meet, EMU performed on floor. In this event, the Eagles were led by Priya Karle (Canton, Mass./Canton) and Brushwood, who each achieved a score of 9.850 to finalize their second meet of the season. The 9.850 marked a career high for Karle and a season best for Brushwood.
