MANKATO, Minn. — Josh Madson has been a commercial photographer in locales such as Los Angeles, New York City, and Tokyo.

His focus is on capturing images that emphasize the distinctive qualities of individuals.

Amid the pandemic, Madson was compelled to leave his residence in Los Angeles and return to his home state of Minnesota.

“I recall feeling extremely isolated and alone. I had the impression that if I felt this way, others must be experiencing similar emotions,” stated Madson.

In the midst of his personal challenges, Madson conceived a plan to utilize his skills to unite the community. After dedicating over 150 hours and conducting 15 sessions, his photographic collages celebrate diversity, unity, and happiness.

“We simply take these joyful, fun portraits of individuals. What you’re witnessing is years of effort to connect people and showcase them in a collage,” remarked Madson.

Josh has listened to the stories of hundreds, capturing their happiness and discovering what they have endured over the recent years.

“There’s a group here called ‘Be the Light,’ which supports women who have survived breast cancer,” Madson shared. “Maria brought her husband’s flag after he passed away, wishing to give it as a keepsake to her children when she’s gone.”

Besides the Madison East Center, Madson’s creations are also displayed within and outside the Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato.

“There are 632 staff members depicted in those murals. For them, this has become a second family. I know many individuals there who have changed their backgrounds to portraits of their friends and relatives,” Madson stated.

For Madson, it wasn’t solely about the portraits – it was a vision of nurturing connections.

“If you have a dream or something you aspire to achieve, don’t allow any self-imposed limitations to prevent you from moving forward,” Madson advised. “Utilize that gift you possess, the capability to create and accomplish something.”

Madson attributes the success of the Community Collage program to his community and the numerous generous sponsors.

Additionally, he has produced a short film titled Community Collage: The Bright Side of Community, which premiered in October. A full-length version of the documentary is set to be unveiled later this year.

His other works are displayed at Gustavus Adolphus College, New Ulm, and La Crosse, Wisconsin, with future exhibitions planned for Rochester and Jacksonville, Florida.
