Another year brings another multitude of gadgets to discuss following CES, one of the globe’s largest technology expos occurring annually in Las Vegas every January.

This year, we witnessed a vehicle powered by solar energy, footwear that  massage your feet while on the move, and an SUV that transforms with six wheels that harbors a spare passenger drone in the trunk for those times when you simply need to “escape from it all.”

However, a wildfire that erupted in Los Angeles on the same day CES officially commenced rapidly overshadowed the tech showcase, diverting much of the gadget coverage to the background while numerous friends and colleagues faced horrifying losses and unimaginable tragedy just a few hundred miles away.

What’s next for the gadget industry?

In the midst of such uncertainty, one dominant theme arose this year: Tech innovators are fully committed to an AI-enhanced future brimming with real-world robots, autonomous vehicles, and AI assistants so sophisticated that they will render Siri appear akin to an archaic dial-up device. But at what moment does that vision transition from imaginative prototypes — each more incredible than the last — to potentially transformative solutions? I’m uncertain, but that’s a query I will continue striving to address as I forge ahead with technology coverage this year.

Meanwhile, here are some of my favorite gadgets, including several that I recently showcased on the Today Show.

The footwear that makes everyone pause and gaze

I would willingly traverse a mile in these avant-garde, fashionable Nike x Hyperice Recovery shoes. The uniquely designed boots heat up, vibrate, and massage your feet and ankles utilizing integrated air compression. Tested on Olympic athletes in Paris, these shoes promise to enhance recovery from workouts, improve blood circulation, and relieve your muscles, tendons, and joints.

They adjust to your foot size thanks to the air compression mechanism, and you can effortlessly walk and handle errands in them without concerns — unless you deem a few curious glances from onlookers a drawback. These are not subtle. They are substantial and generate loud buzzing noises, and you would likely prefer not to board an airplane with them. Additionally, when you crank the heat to the maximum, they become uncomfortably toasty, at least for me.

Nevertheless, these are designed to help you return to peak performance as swiftly as possible, and they’re like…compression socks enhanced to the max. As an avid runner — and someone who recently fractured her ankle — I’m completely onboard. No details on price or release date yet, but I’ll be watching for these.

Could this be the future of computer displays?

I’ve spent an entire week utilizing Lenovo’s ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 rollable laptop that I firstly examined a few days before CES. So far, it continues to amaze me with everything, from the innovative elevating screen design to the remarkable battery duration (considerably longer than my current Mac).

With just a press of a button, the screen elevates, expanding from 14 inches to an impressive 16.7 inches. That represents a notable 50% increase in scrollable real estate. It’s akin to having an entire secondary screen on your laptop, making it perfect for multitasking. When you don’t require it, hit a button, and it retracts back down, returning you to your usual display.

This innovation makes complete sense, as modern web design caters to taller screens, much like your smartphone. Allowing your laptop screen to extend upward is brilliant. Furthermore, it improves your ergonomics, helping you avoid tech neck from constantly looking down at your device.

It’s anticipated to be released early this year with a starting price approximating $3,499.

Why rely on your smartphone as a TV when you can take this TV anywhere?

Here’s another device that increasingly wins me over. LG’s StanbyME 2, a 27-inch QHD touch-screen, serves as both a large cordless tablet and a high-resolution premium TV. It comes equipped with a mobile stand on wheels, allowing you to watch, play, browse the internet, or create wherever you desire.

Who desires to be confined to a single space when you can transport this eye-catching display everywhere? Perfect for binge-watching in the bathtub, undoubtedly, but equally great for your kitchen, tailgate parties, home gym, garage, or any location where you want a smart TV without the fuss of needing an electric outlet. (It boasts four hours of battery life.) As a bonus, it supports AirPlay, allowing you to stream video or games directly from your iPhone, and it features an integrated “Information Board” to help manage your chaotic days.

No pricing information has been released, but we expect it to become available sometime this year.

Dear plants, this device might rescue you from … me.

LeafyPod is an AI-powered plant pot designed for anyone who might not have inherited the green thumb gene. It connects to your smartphone via wifi using a specific app. All you need to do is inform it of the type of plant you’ve placed inside and fill the water reservoir, then let the intelligent pot take care of the rest.

The built-in sensors monitor temperature, light, and moisture — watering your plant as needed without risk of overwatering — and it alerts you when something may be amiss or when it’s time to add more soil or water. The rechargeable battery lasts up to three complete months, letting you vacation without guilt, confident you won’t return to find brown, wilting leaves.

It’s available for preorder right now at $148, with the initial shipments set to reach homes in April.

Self-cleaning kitty litter box straight from The Jetsons

While we may not have arrived at flying cars yet, we do have a litter box that feels like it’s come out of The Jetsons. The Litter-Robot 4 is more than simply a spot for your cat to relieve herself; it’s a gadget brimming with sensors that can weigh your pet, monitor her frequency of visits, and notify you about crucial health issues such as kidney disease (if she goes too often).

It can also distinguish between two felines, making it suitable for homes with multiple cats.

When a feline utilizes the box, it patiently waits for them to exit before spinning around and collecting the litter into a bag-lined compartment that effectively contains the odor and disorder.

Approximately one in three households in the United States owns a cat, leading to a significant amount of scooping that many prefer to avoid. For $699, this dilemma is resolved, and it’s currently available.

A clever pizza oven that bakes the ideal pie in just two minutes

Current Backyard Model P is a pizza oven designed for smart homes, boasting ample power. You can place it on your kitchen counter or use it outdoors to prepare 12-inch pizzas wherever you have a few square feet of suitable area.

It can heat to over 800 degrees and employs a highly intelligent algorithm to regulate heat evenly, so there’s no need to make adjustments midway through cooking. It connects with a smart app featuring a “pizza build calculator” to determine the ideal cooking time and temperature based on the thickness of the dough, toppings, cheese, and sauce.

This trip to Little Italy will set you back $600 when it is released in the second quarter of this year.

Mow your lawn without any effort

AI has also made strides in lawn care, and I wholeheartedly support it. This racecar-styled robotic lawnmower utilizes state-of-the-art machine vision to mow the edges of your lawn without messy cables or an involved setup. Simply connect it with its app, and allow the mower to map your yard and get started.

True to its name, this robotic mower is all-wheel drive for optimal traction and can manage up to ¾ of an acre in its standard configuration, which suffices for virtually any urban yard I’ve encountered. It easily maneuvers around and beneath trees, shrubs, and other typical obstacles, and excels on uneven terrain.

Presales are currently in progress with an initial cost of $2,499.

Porch pirates finally face some resistance

Porch thieves are a prevalent problem in our on-demand delivery culture, but Hyve’s innovative package security system aims to prevent them from succeeding. It is a smart box for your deliveries when you’re unable to pick them up yourself. Rather than allowing them to remain on your porch as a tempting target, Hyve secures them until you are able to collect them, using your smartphone as the key.

It utilizes your front door hinge as a fixture to deter thieves from simply taking the entire box, and it offers ample room for packages of various dimensions. Additionally, it features a tamper alert and wifi connectivity that sends you photos of deliveries as they occur.

Hyve’s waiting list is currently open, with a launch scheduled for June 2025 at approximately $300.

A little robot kitty that blows

Occasionally, a gadget might not necessitate a legitimate reason to exist, yet we adore them regardless. I am thoroughly convinced that this small robotic cat falls into that CAT-egory. You see, it possesses a quite comically specific function: To blow on your hot drinks and food to cool them down. That’s it. That’s its sole purpose.

This whimsical little feline balances on the edge of your mug or bowl and softly blows air over your food or beverage at one of eight adjustable speeds. It may seem absurd – and it certainly is – but it is also endearing, and it operates just as efficiently as if you were blowing on your coffee or soup.yourself.

For merely $25, it definitely falls into the “so ridiculous I need it” category.

Mirmuri

From the same team behind the coffee-cooling feline mentioned earlier comes a concept for the future of robotics that I can wholeheartedly support. Mirumi is an endearing little robotic trinket that dangles from your bag or backpack resembling a tiny baby sloth. It features subtle yet captivating head movements, responding to the activity in its surroundings and appearing charming while doing so.

Priced at $70, it blurs the distinction between cutting-edge gadget and charming plush toy, but the joy it evokes in observers – and you – every time you see it exploring is priceless. Are robotic companions the future trend? All indications suggest… possibly.
