EAST LANSING, Mich. — The No. 20-ranked women’s gymnastics team from the University of Michigan began its 2025 Big Ten Conference season with a season-high score of 196.975 on Friday (Jan. 17) at the Breslin Center, although they ultimately lost to No. 6 Michigan State, which achieved a score of 197.500.

Freshman Sophia Diaz secured her second consecutive title, tying with her teammate Carly Bauman for the uneven bars title during the initial rotation of the evening. Another freshman, Jahzara Ranger, claimed her third career title in consecutive weeks along with her second career victory on the balance beam, tying her personal best at 9.900. Senior Jacey Vore also shared the title with Ranger and successfully landed two routines for the Maize and Blue (3-2, 0-1 Big Ten).

Sophomore Ava Jordan achieved two personal bests and finished third on the vault with a score of 9.875, while Kayli Boozer matched her best with a score of 9.875 on the floor exercise and performed solidly on the beam with a score of 9.850.

The Wolverines started strong on the uneven bars, executing three successful routines and achieving a season-high score of 49.275, bolstered by 9.900s from Bauman and Diaz to win the event. Sophomore Jordan maintained her impressive performance with a personal-best score of 9.825, Vore successfully landed her routine to score 9.850, and Sophie Parenti led the meet off with a solid landing.

Michigan delivered its finest vault rotation of the season, beginning with Jordan’s career-best score of 9.875 which secured third place overall. Ranger followed with another career-best score of 9.850. Jenna Mulligan and Paige Thaxton both tallied matching scores of 9.825, as U-M entered the halfway point with a total score of 98.450, lagging behind the Spartans’ 98.675 after two full rotations.

The improvement persisted into the third rotation for the Maize and Blue. Parenti began with a score of 9.800, and Boozer achieved a career-high score of 9.875 in the next position. Bauman earned her second 9.900 of the night, sending Michigan into the final rotation trailing MSU 148.000-147.600.

Parenti commenced the beam rotation with a score of 9.850, and Boozer matched that in the following spot. Vore executed her second landing of the evening for a score of 9.900, and Ranger equaled her personal best with a score of 9.900, tying for the event victory. Bauman concluded the rotation with a score of 9.875, but it proved insufficient.

U-M continues its road journey as it travels to Seattle, Wash., next Saturday (Jan. 25) for an 8 p.m. PST meet against Washington. The event will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
