  • travelers to gain from simpler and more economical train journeys
  • the introduction of new tap-in tap-out ticketing eliminates the complicated system of fares and tickets, benefiting working individuals
  • enabled by £20 million in governmental funding to update the network and stimulate growth as part of the Plan for Change

In a fortnight, travelers throughout the South East will have the opportunity to utilize tap-in and tap-out ticketing at 47 additional stations for the first time, ensuring they receive the best fare available that day.

The new ticketing, set to be implemented at these stations starting 2 February 2025, will transform numerous key commuter routes, such as Sevenoaks to London Bridge, into entirely contactless experiences, enhancing the simplicity, accessibility, and flexibility of train travel.

Building on our fundamental principle to prioritize passenger experience in our railways, all utilizing tap-in tap-out will be assured of the most favorable ticket available that day, saving both time and funds on each journey, thereby helping to elevate living standards and benefiting working individuals – fulfilling our Plan for Change.

Contactless ticketing will be expanded to an additional 49 stations throughout 2025, including London Stansted Airport – making all London airports reachable via tap-in tap-out ticketing for the first time ever – thereby ensuring smooth transitions from train to airplane across the capital. This will feature 4 stations in the South East announced today (20 January 2025):

  • Baldock
  • Hitchin
  • Letchworth Garden City
  • Stevenage

Modernizing our transport infrastructure, offering better value fares, and enhancing passenger experiences to attract more riders back to the railway is central to the government’s goal to foster growth and improve circumstances for working individuals.

Simplifying the intricate fares system is merely one aspect of the government’s commitment to updating Britain’s transport network; it is part of the broader plan to execute the most significant renovation of our rail infrastructure in a generation, placing passengers at the core of each journey and inspiring more individuals to choose rail travel.

Rail Minister, Lord Peter Hendy, commented:

The current ticketing framework is excessively complicated, so we aim to alleviate the confusion of navigating this maze of fares by introducing new technology allowing passengers to effortlessly tap-in tap-out, while ensuring they receive the best fare available that day.

This convenient technology will streamline thousands of daily journeys for passengers across the South East, and we intend to roll it out to additional cities as soon as feasible, driving growth nationwide as part of our Plan for Change.

We are undertaking the largest transformation of our rail network in a generation, ensuring passengers are central to every journey, encouraging more individuals to opt for rail travel.

These rail routes establish crucial links throughout the South East, providing essential connections to the city, coastline, and countryside, whether for employment, education, or meeting friends and family.

The department is collaborating closely with Greater Manchester and the West Midlands to formulate their strategies for further extending contactless ticketing.

Jacqueline Starr, Chief Executive of Rail Delivery Group, stated:

We aspire for our customers to travel effortlessly with fares that accommodate travelers’ needs in the post-pandemic era. We are thrilled that pay-as-you-go technology is being implemented at 47 stations, offering convenience, simplicity, and flexibility, thus making it easier than ever for patrons to pay and travel seamlessly.

We are dedicated to developing a more straightforward and cost-effective fare system that not only meets our customers’ expectations but also supports the long-term expansion of rail travel and enhances the overall customer experience.

Tap-in tap-out technology was launched at 6 Chiltern stations last summer, marking the first beneficiaries of this rollout, including High Wycombe, Beaconsfield, and Denham Golf Club.

In the initial 6 months of contactless ticketing being active at those 6 stations, over 268,000 entries and exits were recorded using contactless cards or mobile devices – highlighting the system’s popularity among patrons of those stations already.

Alex Williams, Chief Customer and Strategy Officer at Transport for London (TfL), mentioned:

The growing interest in convenient travel via pay-as-you-go with contactless has seen it flourish and gain traction across London and its surrounding regions in the decade since its inception in London. We are pleased to extend pay-as-you-go contactless to 47 additional stations on 2 February.

This will significantly benefit those traveling by rail outside of London, facilitating a more flexible and convenient experience, eliminating the necessity for pre-purchasing tickets or paper Travelcards when traveling into the capital, and bolstering the wider UK economic recovery through improved access to rail travel.

Great British Railways will unify track and train operations under a singular strategic direction, with an unwavering focus on enhancing services for passengers and customers, while modernizing the network through the adoption of technologies such as contactless ticketing.
