Like numerous Americans, Harley Hurosky from Texas opted to participate in the “Dry January” initiative and abstain from alcohol for a month after indulging heavily during the festive season.
“The extensive eating and drinking during the holiday period left me feeling less than optimal,” Harley remarked to Fox News Digital. “Thus, I thought beginning the year with a focus on feeling healthier would be a wise decision.”
Living in Houston, Hurosky aimed to gather a group of supporters not only to motivate her but also to accompany her during her alcohol-free hiatus. Unfortunately, that didn’t quite materialize.
“I naively presumed that my family and friends would rally behind me and partake for moral encouragement,” Hurosky stated. “It turns out, the only commitment they have is to remain comfortably on the sidelines with drinks in hand.”
Hurosky chose to document the responses of those she invited and shared their reactions on social media.
“I included my parents on the list because they are dependable when it comes to answering calls and I anticipated their reactions would be entertaining, which they indeed were,” she explained.
“I expected the majority of my loved ones to reply with a joking ‘no,’ especially since asking them to abstain from alcohol for an entire month seemed like a bold request,” Hurosky noted. “However, their responses – both the refusals and laughs – were precisely what made the video so enjoyable.”
The viral clip amassed over 743,000 views on TikTok by early this weekend.
Hurosky works as a marketing manager and stated that she enjoys creating content for social media.
“Honestly, I simply love the creative process. It’s immensely enjoyable to produce and share moments that bring joy or laughter to others,” she expressed. “My content generally revolves around relatable, humorous situations as that’s how I tend to connect with people.”
Hurosky stated that most of those she approached are “quite social and frequently travel,” so she anticipated some amusing reactions.
“That’s exactly why I decided to record all the FaceTime calls,” she elaborated. “What I didn’t foresee was that the most entertaining responses would come from my parents. My father, who is just as quirky as I am, completely stole the spotlight. Sorry for doubting you, Dad. You really came through.”
Hurosky feels confident that she can make it through January without consuming any alcohol.
“This isn’t my first experience with Dry January. My boyfriend and I successfully managed it last year,” she conveyed to Fox News Digital.
“The intention was to drop a few pounds and initiate a healthier lifestyle.”
While they succeeded in eliminating liquid calories last year, Hurosky mentioned the couple “may have compensated with takeout and dining out … Let’s just say the calories saved from skipping drinks likely came back via our delivery orders.”
However, she discovered additional benefits from abstaining from alcohol.
“We certainly felt less lethargic and enjoyed life without the dreaded hangovers,” Hurosky noted.
“Moreover, we proved to ourselves that we could adhere to the challenge and go a full month without drinking, so I would consider it a success overall.”
In the end, Hurosky expressed that she wasn’t shocked by the refusals from her friends and family this year.
“I have surrounded myself with individuals who appreciate a good time and a nice drink, and Dry January didn’t quite align with their vibe.”
