Standards had been raised and wreaths laid as veterans and residents marked the eightieth anniversary of the tip of the Second World War.
The Service of Remembrance, which commemorated the anniversary of VJ Day, befell within the Memorial Gardens on Marine Parade West, Clacton, on Friday (15 August) at 11am.
The sombre service was hosted on the city’s War Memorial by the Clacton department of the Royal British Legion (RBL) and was supported by Tendring District Council (TDC).
It was carried out by Reverend David Lower and the service included a studying from Council Chairman Bill Davidson, who represented the district in paying tribute to those that served within the Far East.
Councillor Davidson mentioned: “VJ Day is a poignant reminder of the courage and sacrifice shown by those who served in the Pacific theatre of the Second World War.”
“It is an honour to take part in this service and pay tribute to the brave individuals who gave so much for the freedoms we enjoy today.”
Councillor Dan Casey, who can also be President of Clacton RBL and the council’s Armed Forces Champion, added: “On behalf of our committee and members, I would like to thank all the Forces organisations, standard-bearers, and members of the public who joined us to mark this important occasion.
“Your presence ensures that the legacy of those who served is never forgotten.”
“Also a special thank you to WW2 veteran James Goss, who is 100 years old and also his lovely wife Gloria who attended the service, it made the day.”
