According to the Tompkins County Whole Health, a bat has been discovered with rabies situated roughly 50 meters away from the swimming space on Lower Buttermilk Gorge Trail, at Buttermilk Falls.

On Friday, August 22 the bat was decided to be rabid by the New York State Rabies Laboratory. Earlier that day, the bat was reportedly first seen on the bottom appearing uncommon round 11:30 a.m., and was later eliminated by Park Staff round 1 p.m.
