KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) – Jace Morgan is the type of one who pushes the boundaries of what people can do.
He’s knowledgeable athlete and coach who’s accomplished ultra-endurance races internationally, and he grew up proper right here in Michiana on Lake Wawasee.
Now, he’s taking it again to his roots by taking over a problem by no means executed earlier than: swim all the 14-mile shoreline of Lake Wawasee.
“I grew up here on the lake on the north shore, and it became a mission of mine to kind of swim around the lake and see if it was even possible,” Morgan says. “I did some research and found out that no one has completed a full lap, no one has ever swam the whole shoreline. I started tossing around the idea with friends and family about swimming the whole lake, and everyone seemed pretty excited about it.”
Morgan has been coaching for 5 months now forward of this huge feat.
He might be following the conventional sanctioned tips for open water swimming, which means he can’t contact the underside of the lake or contact a ship alongside the best way.
But since this might be a full day of swimming, he’ll be capable to get some meals and diet from his crew following him on a kayak.
“The 14 miles is definitely a long ways,” Morgan says. “It’s a daunting task, and no one’s done it yet on the lake. Definitely people have swam 14 miles before and I’m excited to see if I’m capable of completing the whole lap.”
But he’s not simply doing this to problem himself. Morgan partnered with the Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation for this “Lap the Lake” problem to boost consciousness for nature conservation and the significance of water high quality.
“We were really excited when Jace reached out to us asking if he could do his start and finish here at the park,” says Becky Levinson, board member for the Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation. “We feel like this is a perfect place for him to be able to launch this journey around the lake and bring an eye to conservation.”
“I would love to inspire the next generation of conservation, and hopefully it sheds some light on what the lake needs and what the work they’re doing to protect it,” Morgan says. “We hope that this becomes something that we can springboard into more action and create more positive impacts on the lake.”
Morgan says his inspiration is his 11-year-old daughter. He needs to indicate her the significance of being courageous and to do it, even if you’re scared!
“My family has been my rock; my wife has been my crew chief in all my ultra marathons and endeavors. She’s always been by my side,” Morgan says. “My daughter’s been there as well. She’s a big supporter of everything I do. She thinks I’m crazy. She loves to be a part of it and see it all go down.”
Morgan says the largest problem for him might be staying heat throughout this swim now that the water temperature is dropping because the summer season season has gone on and sustaining his security.
He says he’s hoping to finish this 14-mile swim inside eight hours.
He’ll be beginning the swim on the conservatory’s dock this Wednesday at 8 a.m.
