“I initially joined cross country and track as an extra thing to do outside of school to pass time,” Rout stated. “But after my first meet, I think that’s when I started taking it seriously.”

He caught with it, and now, Rout’s 15:06.2 is the perfect time within the East Region this season and second-best time within the state amongst each Class A and Class B. He trails solely Bismarck senior Owen Hintz, who leads North Dakota with a 14:49.7 this season.

“The first time I saw (Rout) run, it was like the kid just glided,” Davies boys cross nation coach Jason Holland stated. “And I knew that he had a gift, but it was fun to be able to see him put the work in. For him to be able to show off his gift was the best part.”

Rout’s earlier personal-best in 5,000-meter competitions was a 16:03.9, good for a runner-up end as a freshman on the Class A East Region meet final season.

In only one offseason, he’s improved upon that mark by almost a minute.

Holland stated the numerous enchancment stemmed from Rout ramping up his coaching in the summertime months.

“He ended up putting 300-plus miles in that he didn’t put in last year and that helped him develop a little bit,” Holland stated. “But I feel it’s simply that pure expertise, that talent that lies inside him that’s popping out proper now.

For Rout, consistency in these summer season months has been the important thing to success for the underclassman.

“A lot of my improvement is from staying consistent,” Rout stated. “I think my team and I have tried to stay consistent throughout the summer by doing summer mileage and running as a team together during morning practices.

“That helped me a lot, especially because we have an extra way to stay consistent when it’s not just thinking about yourself, but to help improve your team. It makes it a lot easier to show up to every practice and stay consistent during the offseason.”

Rout is already a state champion in observe and subject. He was part of the Eagles’ 4×400-meter relay crew that clocked a 3:21.30 to win the Class A ultimate on the state meet final season alongside teammates Golden Deebom, Hunter Swanson and Joshua Beil.

Rout’s offseason coaching this summer season has paid off. He picked up his first varsity win on the Orriginals Invitational in Jamestown with a time of 15:52 in August and stays unbeaten by means of 4 occasions.

“It helps create a friendly, competitive atmosphere during practices,” Rout stated. “When you’re pushing, your whole team starts pushing with you and helps you improve.

“I think it’s very special because we all have our own goals and we all help each other push to achieve those goals.”

As a crew, the Eagles are ranked No. 2 within the newest Class A boys coaches ballot and have two runners within the Top 10 particular person ballot — Rout at No. 2 and sophomore Keagan Thomson at No. 8.

“We’ve got a bunch of young guys that are hungry,” Holland stated. “They’ve all worked really hard this summer. They support each other, Every day, they come to practice prepared and ready to compete.

Rout stated his final objectives because the season progresses are to proceed enhancing and develop his confidence in races. He additionally stated he’d prefer to run collegiately after highschool.

“I see him having the potential to run at the highest level,” Holland stated. “We’ve had some good runners at Davies throughout the history of our program. For (Rout) to break Hunter Lucas’ record by 24 seconds is just a telling sign as a sophomore that he can run at the highest level.”

In the short-term, Rout’s mindset stays easy.

“The mindset is to stay consistent,” Rout stated. “And consistency will make improvement later on.”
