Did you miss me?

I took most of final week off, Tuesday by means of Friday. One of my besties came around, all the best way from Kansas (no Dorothy jokes, please). We’ve been lifelong mates, had our children on the similar time, and have been there as wanted by means of main life adjustments, together with comforting each other when our spouses handed away.

But principally, we’ve laughed rather a lot — and nonetheless do. Linda is somebody I can really feel comfy doing something with, from ready on the groupie line to try to get in to see Davy Jones of The Monkees fame (did that) to dancing to rock’n’roll with the quantity at 11, not 10 (a shout out to “This Is Spinal Tap”) to only sitting round.

Seeing the sights

So, what did we do, you ask? It was just about a whirlwind with intermittent relaxation stops alongside the best way. We took the Trolley prepare downtown on Sunday and the volunteers who run it stored up a gentle stream of historic banter about Astoria, stating the sights (the Goonie home, “Kindergarten Cop” college, the ill-fated Buoy Beer constructing that collapsed in 2022) and explaining why the ships change positions on the river (tides). Then we perused the Sunday Market (it’s nearly over for the season, that is the final week!).

The remainder of the week was a soothing hodgepodge of no matter we felt like doing. One day, we drove to Seaside and spent two wonderful uninterrupted hours on the Starry Night Inn, soaking in sizzling bubble baths and taking turns attempting out the therapeutic massage chairs and sauna — all whereas listening to chill jazz within the background. It’s a tough advice for anybody who may bear in mind the “Calgon-take-me-away” commercials however alas is presently tub-less, like me.

Another time, we awoke and determined that was the proper day to go see The Column — and climb all the best way to the highest (164 steps!). Wow, what a view from up there. And for these of you who could do not forget that I got here limping into city with a damaged leg, I’m proud to say I lastly was capable of conquer the very best level in Astoria — and really feel like a real Astorian. We even sailed the requisite gliders from up prime.

Oh, we had a lot enjoyable — Linda bought clam chowder wherever we went and declared every time it was “the best I’ve ever had.” We went to see the Wreck of the Peter Iredale on a very windy day, getting a free sandblasted facial within the cut price. We hit as many seashores as we had time for: Sunset, Seaside, Seaview and Long Beach.

It was over all too quickly, however I’m fairly certain Linda will probably be again. She fell in love with the sound of the ocean lions barking, laughing and saying they reminded her of again when her youngsters can be combating over the distant.

Thrill Day

And talking of nostalgic occasions that come and go earlier than you already know it, Halloween is correct across the nook.

And proper together with it’s Thrill Day.

That’s proper, Thrill Day, which is when the largest flashmob of zombies concurrently dance to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” occurs on Saturday, Oct. 25. Like I stated, it occurs at the very same time all over the world, so meaning it’s at 3 p.m. right here. This is an occasion I’ve participated in for 10 years, and simply because I moved to Astoria, I’m not going to vary that ghoulish custom. I’ve even arrange a Facebook web page and registered Thrill the World Astoria as an official venue for 2025. You’re welcome.

I’m educating the dance to anybody, younger, previous and in-between, at 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays starting Oct. 11. Meet me in The Astorian’s parking zone.

Cue Vincent Price: “For no mere mortal can resist the evil of — The Thriller.”

Jeanne Huff is the editor of The Astorian.
