WASHINGTON, Nov 26 (Reuters) – NASA’s Perseverance rover has obtained proof that the environment of Mars is electrically lively, detecting electrical discharges – what one scientist referred to as “mini-lightning” – typically related to whirlwinds referred to as mud devils that frequently saunter over the planet’s floor.

The researchers analyzed 28 hours of microphone recordings made by the rover over a span of two Martian years, detecting 55 electrical discharges, normally related to mud devils and mud storm fronts.

“We did not detect lightning by the common definition. It was a small spark, perhaps a few millimeters long, not really lightning.
