Pictures on the Intersection of Photography & Collage

Thursday, 15 January 2026, 7PM EST (0000 UTC) on Zoom

“Pictures at the Intersection of Photography & Collage” is at the moment on view at Kolaj Institute Gallery by way of 24 January 2026. All of the artworks on this exhibition are examples of artists working on the intersection of collage and pictures. Artists are reducing, mixing, and including to pictures. They are photographing collage discovered naturally occurring within the city panorama. They are intervening on or repurposing historic pictures to inform a brand new story. Artists are appropriating the grammatical idea “Locative” and photographing fragments strategically positioned on the earth or in a fabricated panorama. They are making artwork with their household pictures. They are collaging into self-portraits. They are taking pictures to make use of as fragments. They are utilizing the solar as glue and the fabric of pictures as a meaning-making machine. Each of those approaches results in extra complicated storytelling that pushes the boundaries of conventional pictures and collage.

During this version of Kolaj LIVE Online, Ric Kasini Kadour will current a digital tour of the exhibition and we are going to hear from a number of the artists within the exhibition. Kadour can even current a preview of the brand new zine, Locative Kolaj by Special Agent Collage Collective, which was made by attendees on the 2025 version of Kolaj Fest New Orleans. Kadour wrote, “The intersection of collage and photography is not like a simple crossroads where two streets meet. It’s more like a roundabout where many paths come together before shooting off in different directions. The deeper one gets into this inquiry, the more road metaphors fail. It may be more helpful to think of the intersection of collage and photography as neuropathways or mycelium.”

ABOUT KOLAJ INSTITUTE’S PHOTOGRAPHY & COLLAGE PROJECT

The mediums of collage and pictures are certain collectively in an ongoing dialogue. The photographer makes photos of the world. The collagist remixes these photos to inform a narrative concerning the world we dwell in. “Today, we’re taking more photos than at any previous time in history,” famous EyeEm contributor Lars Mensel. “Many photographers are asking themselves how to set their work apart from that of their peers. Photography has become less about the skill to take technically perfect pictures–most modern smartphones accomplish this at the touch of a button–but how pictures are combined to tell a story.” In partnership with the New Orleans Photo Alliance, the Photography & Collage venture explores the intersection of those two mediums. We ask, What occurs when a collagist picks up the digicam? What occurs when a photographer collages their photos?

Throughout 2024 and 2025, Kolaj Institute hosted digital residencies throughout which artists made work on the intersection of pictures and collage. Each June, New Orleans Photo Alliance Gallery hosted exhibitions as a part of Kolaj Fest New Orleans and in December 2024, Kolaj Institute offered “Camera & Collage” at its gallery in New Orleans. These actions together with that of plenty of solo artists in residence and articles within the journal have given us many factors of reference to view and take into consideration the intersection. In December 2025 as a part of PhotoNOLA 2025, Kolaj Institute offered, “Pictures at the Intersection of Photography & Collage”, an exhibition at its gallery in New Orleans. Kolaj Institute will publish a e book about their findings.
