Cleveland teacher addresses drowning disparities by swimming classes

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – An area non-profit, Swim Like Me, is combating to interrupt limitations and uproot stereo varieties.

The teams founder, Andre Morton makes use of the educating pool at Cleveland State as his classroom.

Every Thursday, by a partnership with the Foundry, nearly a dozen youngsters be taught to swim. The class is sort of 90% Black.

According to the CDC Black youngsters are seven instances extra prone to drown in a swimming pool than white youngsters, based on statistics that prompted one man to take motion.

Morton tells me it was the tragedy of the Shreveport six that inspired him to begin educating individuals to swim.

“That sparked me to say hey, I know drowning is preventable,” Morton stated.

Coach Morton teaches lessons and personal classes to adults and youngsters. Incorporating life saving strategies for non swimmers into the curriculum.

Morton tells 19 News lots of his college students have to beat the worry that comes with a generational trauma .

He and his spouse even created a workbook and comic book to assist navigate among the fears.

“Black folks and Africans used to be the best swimmers on the planet,” stated Morton. “There are slave narratives of Black people doing great feats swimming across the water”.

But throughout instances of segregation, it turned arduous for Black individuals to get entry to swimming swimming pools.

The ability of swimming wasn’t handed down by the household tree, resulting in tragedies just like the one in Louisiana.

With each lesson, Morton is combating stereo varieties.
