Nonprofit hosts enjoyable run, makahiki video games to have fun Mahina Olelo Hawaii

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, Hawaiian Language Month, continued into its closing week of celebrations, with an enormous occasion at Kapiʻolani Park on Sunday.

The nonprofit, Ka ʻAumanu o Mānoa, hosted the all-day, family-friendly occasion known as “Kūkini Ka ʻAumanu: Holo Me Māui,” which included a 5K enjoyable run, conventional makahiki video games, and cultural actions.

The occasion introduced collectively households of Hawaiian immersion colleges, volunteers, and the group, elevating funds for the nonprofit’s work to uplift Hawaiian language schooling by way of place-based studying rooted in Mānoa, organizers stated.

“This event is about more than running or games, it’s about bringing our community together to celebrate ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, and the joy of learning through storytelling, movement and play,” stated Devon Haia, pelekikena (president) of Ka ʻAumanu o Mānoa. “By hosting this during Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, we are reinforcing that our language lives through everyday experiences, across generations, and within our ʻohana.”

Jacob Aki, a dad or mum at Ka ʻAumanu o Mānoa, stated whereas Hawaiian immersion colleges have come a great distance, extra may nonetheless be accomplished.

“When you look at a lot of our Hawaiian immersion schools, they’re understaffed, under-resourced,” he stated, “so while we’ve come a far way and our language has come a far way, I think there’s a lot of work to be done to make sure we’re getting the resources we need to educate our children.”

Aki added that he realized ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi in highschool and on the University of Hawaiʻi, and now has the prospect to go it alongside to his keiki.

“Growing up in our language was something that I never had the opportunity to do so, being able to provide them with that and to really make it normal for them, no matter where they are,” he stated. “Whether they’re at the classroom, out here at the park, or anywhere in this world, that they are confident in who they are, as not just a Native Hawaiian but someone who speaks our language.”

All funds raised will go in the direction of Ka ʻAumanu o Mānoa and different Hawaiian immersion colleges.
