Responsibilities

The Surgical Technologist (ST/CST) for the Midwest Internal Travel Team at Mayo Clinic will move among various Mayo Clinic locations in Minnesota and Wisconsin as dictated by patient care requirements. This temporary position is anticipated to conclude within 6 months, with the potential for extension up to 1 year.   

As part of the Internal Travel Team, the ST/CST embodies the core values and culture of Mayo Clinic. The ST/CST will routinely travel to multiple sites. Flexibility and adaptability are crucial for work assignments and schedules. ST/CSTs help maintain our OR settings to ensure safety, confirm proper equipment operation, and guarantee that procedures occur under the safest conditions for patients. They are highly skilled professionals in upholding sterile environments. They prepare surgeons and assistants, ensure patients are draped in a sterile manner and position themselves next to or across from surgeons to assist during surgeries. They are responsible for managing all instruments, scrubs, sutures, implants, etc. ST/CSTs also meticulously account for all tools and supplies before, during, and after procedures. Prepares a sterile table for each operation, ensuring all necessary instruments, including sutures, blades, cautery, suction, implants, medications, and solutions, are accessible to the doctors. Assists in draping the surgical area to ensure correct exposure of the operative site, safeguarding each patient’s rights to privacy, dignity, safety, and comfort. Provides a serene atmosphere for surgical patients. Aids the surgeon when no assistant is present. Accurately identifies items on the back table. Applies fundamental and updated knowledge of surgical instruments for competent performance of designated tasks.

The Surgical Technologist delivers secure and effective care to surgical patients under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN) and in collaboration with the surgeon. The Surgical Technologist predominantly operates in the scrub role and is accountable for selecting, preparing, and sustaining instrumentation, equipment, and supplies. They possess knowledge in applying sterile and aseptic techniques and can adapt to unexpected situations within the perioperative arena. The Surgical Technologist employs an understanding of human anatomy, surgical procedures, instruments, and technology as a vital member of the surgical team.

Qualifications

Requirements for Surgical Techs:

  • Completion of an accredited Surgical Tech Program or military surgical technology course
  • Minimum of 1 year of surgical tech experience required
  • Willingness to travel across various Mayo Clinic locations throughout Minnesota & Wisconsin

Additional Qualifications:

  • Ability to adhere to both oral and written directions is necessary. Basic computer literacy required
  • Experience in traveler or float pool preferred
  • Must be in good standing regarding job performance
  • Current Mayo Clinic employees must have held their role for a year prior to applying

License and Certification:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers from one of the following programs: 
    • American Heart Association (Title: BLS for Healthcare Providers or BLS Provider)
    • Red Cross (Title: CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers or BLS for Healthcare Providers)
  • Certification in Surgical Technology from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) is required within one year of hire and must be maintained thereafter

Internal transfers to Rochester or Southeast Minnesota are required to have the Surgical Technology certification from NBSTSA
