Every Sunday, I reach out to photographers who have previously been featured on PHOTOSNACK and request them to share their spontaneous thoughts, insights, reflections, or suggestions.

Today, I am presenting the message I received from Lisa Ryan-Boyle.

When asked, “What do you photograph?” I typically respond with a simple, “Anything.” I do not perceive myself as a specialist in a singular area of photography. I will always view myself as a student of the art, someone who utilizes the camera to enhance my vision and skills just as much as I employ photography to convey my thoughts.

I reside in a stunning location, so landscapes are a frequent subject. Yet, a significant portion of my development as a photographer transpires when I challenge myself to explore the new or the uncomfortable.

This autumn, I focused on indoor still-life photography. I began capturing images with natural light, which I adore, before unpacking and arranging my strobes, which I am not fond of. I had the works of a few artists in mind and contemplated how to draw inspiration from them while communicating something distinct.

Five strategies that work for me:

1. Explore the artworks of other creators – any medium, not limited to photography – for inspiration;

2. Stay inquisitive – experiment with new subjects, discover new places, revisit old locations with a fresh perspective, try new equipment, etc.;

3. Share your creations;

4. Produce prints;

5. Seek the encouragement of fellow photographers and reciprocate their support generously.

Lisa Ryan-Boyle was featured in PHOTOSNACK #395.

Sunday Editions connect you with photographers whose work you have previously discovered through PHOTOSNACK.

I aspire to unveil some genuine aspects of the individuals behind the lenses.

I do not pose any specific inquiries. I request them to share whatever arises in their minds when they consider YOU, the newsletter audience.

This approach renders their replies authentic and personal.

I hope you found today’s Sunday Edition enjoyable.

Until next time,
Tomasz
