“Capturing Nyack: The Artful Lens of Julie Stapen Photography”

For Julie Stapen, photography transcends a mere profession—it represents a profound passion that has flourished for years. Her adventure commenced in the fifth grade when she acquired her first camera, enrolling in every available photography course. This initial zeal propelled her to pursue visual arts in higher education, concentrating her final thesis on photography, spending a summer immersed in the art scene at the School of Art Centers International in Florence, and attaining a master’s degree in Studio Art through NYU and the International Center of Photography (ICP). Throughout her journey, she also obtained certification in art education and accumulated experience while collaborating with fashion and documentary photographers, prior to joining the New York Post in 2003, where she captured features for its Sunday publication.

Julie officially established Julie Stapen Photography in 2010 after transitioning to prioritize her expanding family while maintaining her passion for documenting life’s most significant moments. “It felt like the natural direction considering where I was in my life,” Julie expresses. “I wished to spend as much time with my little ones while still photographing a wide array of subjects.”

From families and weddings to bar and bat mitzvahs, corporate gatherings and branding, as well as senior portraits, Julie’s portfolio is as varied as her artistic history. Her work is characterized by her capacity to help her subjects feel at ease and connected, capturing genuine moments with a discerning eye for beauty and presenting people in the manner they wish to be perceived. Renowned for her expertise in natural illumination—particularly her distinctive backlit imagery—Julie crafts timeless photographs that narrate a tale. “With every session, I perceive it not solely as capturing images, but as sharing a story,” she clarifies. “There’s an abundance that contributes to creating a remarkable photo, and for me, all of these elements harmoniously come together.”

Julie’s editing approach, deeply rooted in her experience with film photography, showcases her dedication to authenticity. She captures everything in-camera, utilizing Lightroom to enhance her images with the same precision she would apply in a darkroom.

Julie moved from NYC to Nyack in 2010 alongside her husband and their two-year-old son. Since that time, she has welcomed three daughters and embraced the lively, multifaceted community. Over the years, Julie has had the honor of photographing numerous local families and businesses, encapsulating the distinctive essence of Nyack. “Nyack is my family’s residence, and the variety of stunning locales and extraordinary individuals here continually motivates me,” she states.

Documenting the progression and milestones of local families has held particular significance for her—a testament to the trust and rapport she has established within the community. Julie is currently working towards establishing a studio space to augment her outdoor and event photography. The studio will not only enable her to expand her artistic range but also create a venue for community gatherings and photography workshops—merging her passion for teaching with her creative pursuit.

Julie’s enthusiasm for her art is evident in her commitment to preserving significant, personal memories. “Each shoot fills my heart,” she mentions. “Being a photographer is far more than a business to me—it’s one of my deepest passions.”
