MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Following an extremely frigid kickoff to the weekend yesterday, we’re shifting back to warmer conditions for the upcoming 7-10 days. In fact, we’re monitoring a significant warm-up for the latter part of this week! Peak temperatures are expected to rise to the mid 30s by Christmas, then leap to around 50° by Friday!

This indicates that our snow accumulation will rapidly decrease, and the forthcoming weather systems that arrive will probably result in more of a chaotic mix of rain and snow.

What’s Coming Up…

Sunday will be predominantly overcast, though I anticipate there will be a few glimpses of sunshine here and there. Winds will be somewhat stronger than yesterday, drawing in warmer air from the south. Highs will reach the mid and lower 30s.

Overnight, temperatures will genuinely become warmer following a warm front that approaches. A low-pressure system will start to move closer to the state post-midnight. If you are commuting or traveling on Monday morning, expect some areas of flurries and light rain that may create icy spots on the roads. The likelihood of this is particularly elevated north of the Dells, so prepare for some added time if you’re heading in that direction.

During the afternoon, more sleet and rain may occur, but road temperatures should be sufficiently warm by then to eliminate the risk of any freezing. Peak temperatures will be in the mid and upper 30s throughout the afternoon.

Christmas Eve & Christmas Day…

Any travel on Christmas Eve is expected to be uneventful, with mostly cloudy but dry conditions anticipated across the state. High temperatures will hover near or above freezing in most areas. Christmas Day on Wednesday appears predominantly cloudy as well, with temperatures in the mid and upper 40s. There is a possibility of some drizzle or flurry activity, but temperatures will likely be warm enough to ensure road conditions remain free of ice.

Temperatures will spike after Christmas, reaching 50° on Friday! Rain is anticipated on both Friday and Saturday.
