Maryland inhabitants and travelers are encouraged to kick off the new year positively with First Day Hikes, part of a nationwide effort spearheaded by America’s State Parks. From December 31, 2024, until January 2, 2025, Maryland residents can enjoy the splendor of their local state parks via an array of guided and self-guided hiking options.

This yearly custom presents an excellent opportunity to reconnect with nature, breathe in some fresh air, and celebrate the commencement of 2025. With hikes available statewide, there’s something for everyone.

This year’s First Day Hike selections encompass:

Ranger-Guided Hikes: Participants can join an insightful Maryland State Park Ranger for a guided experience. These hikes have designated start times and may necessitate prior registration.

Self-Guided Hikes: Adventurers can navigate trails at their own pace throughout the weekend. Clearly marked routes facilitate enjoyable scenery, while park staff and volunteers will be available to assist before venturing out.

AllTrails-Guided Hikes: New for 2025, Maryland State Parks have collaborated with the AllTrails Public Lands Program to assist visitors in discovering and navigating park trails with simplicity. Hikers can download the AllTrails application to access highlighted hikes, monitor their journey, and share their experience on social platforms.

Participants can enjoy special perks including First Day Hike “I Hiked” Stickers, available at select sites while supplies last. Those who opt for a self-directed hike can choose any trail or any Maryland State Park on January 1 and are encouraged to visit the DNR website to share their experiences and how many miles they traversed.

Hikes will occur in every area of Maryland. Visitors can locate a First Day Hikes event nearby on the Maryland Department of Natural Resources website.

“First Day Hikes are an ideal method to commence the new year—connecting with nature, exploring our magnificent state parks, and establishing a healthful tone for the months ahead,” remarked Ranger Sarah Milbourne, Western Region manager of the Maryland Park Service. “These hikes unite families and friends to experience Maryland’s remarkable outdoor areas in person.”

“There is no superior way to initiate the New Year than by spending time with loved ones in the great outdoors,” asserted Ranger Mark Spurrier, South Central Region manager of the Maryland Park Service. “Start a fresh tradition by visiting one of your Maryland state parks and joining a First Day Hike nearby.”

“First Day Hikes on Maryland’s Eastern Shore offer a distinctive chance to explore tranquil woodlands, a cypress swamp, or the breathtaking Atlantic shoreline that renders this area so exceptional,” noted Dana Paterra, Eastern Region Manager for the Maryland Park Service. “Whether led by a ranger or explored at your own pace, a First Day Hike is the prime method to greet 2025, enjoy the natural splendor of the Eastern Shore, and begin the new year with a healthy start.”
