The Museum of the Home has revealed an exciting new lineup of photography exhibitions aimed at investigating the significance and influence of capturing the mundane. These exhibitions will provide a distinctive perspective on various lives, environments, and narratives that mold our perceptions of home. Throughout 2025, they will be conducting an array of events and research initiatives to emphasize the subtleties of household life through the art of photography.
There will be four exhibitions and displays available for viewing. From David Hoffman’s impactful stills illustrating the resilience of East End communities to Kenneth Lam’s reimagining of domestic settings through still-life images. The World Food Photography Awards 2025 highlights the relationship between food and home, while the Home Darkroom project investigates the significance of home darkrooms in LGBTQIA+ creative expression.
From Museum of the Home: The Museum of the Home is thrilled to declare a season focused on exploring the impact and power of photography. This medium provides a unique lens into everyday lives, surroundings, and stories that influence our comprehension of home. Through exhibitions, events, and research initiatives, the Museum seeks to examine how photography encapsulates the intricacies of domestic life—featuring moments of intimacy, transformation, and continuity.
Within the Museum, photography complements their current collections and offers fresh insights into our living conditions, locations, and the emotional landscapes we occupy. Photography serves as a multifaceted medium that transcends time, safeguarding both personal and collective memories while documenting the
changing interpretations of home across various cultures and generations.
Regardless of whether you are a passionate photographer or a casual viewer, this season invites you to reflect on how images influence our interpretations and recollections of domestic environments.
Danielle Patten, Director of Creative Programmes and Collections, remarks, ‘By highlighting photography, we are initiating new discussions about what home signifies in the past, present, and future. Join us on this visual expedition that encapsulates the essence of home through the lens of a camera.
Endurance & Joy in the East End: David Hoffman Photography Exhibition
Launched in October 2024, Endurance & Joy in the East End features the compelling work of David Hoffman. Curated by The Gentle Author, this exhibition showcases Hoffman’s remarkable images depicting homelessness, racism, and activism from 1971 to 1987. Taken during his period residing in a squat in
Fieldgate Mansions, Whitechapel, his intimate and empathetic photographs capture the strength of the East End communities.
The exhibition will be open from Tuesday 15 October to Sunday 30 March and coincides with the publication of Hoffman’s monograph by Spitalfields Life Books, Endurance & Joy in the East End 1971–1987.
Still Living: Kenneth Lam x Museum of the Home
Acclaimed photographer Kenneth Lam shares his artistic perspective in the Museum’s new permanent gallery Rooms Through Time: 1878-2049. Recognized for his still-life photography, Lam has crafted a collection of seven exclusive images that reinterpret the Museum’s historical and contemporary domestic environments, including a High-rise Flat in 2005 and a British-Vietnamese kitchen from 2024. These artworks will be available for purchase as postcards during the Museum’s Late series, Housewarmings, and will be on display starting from 28th January 2025.
World Food Photography Awards 2025
The Museum of the Home will be a venue for the World Food Photography Awards 2025, sponsored by Tenderstem® Bimi® Broccolini. Featuring over 25 categories, the Awards celebrate food in its diverse forms. The newly added category “Food as Home” will include Museum of the Home Director Sonia

The Home Darkroom and the Freedom of Photographic Production in Britain, 1950s-present
The Centre for Studies of Home, a collaboration between the Museum of the Home and Queen Mary University of London, is partnering with the University of Westminster on the PhD project The Home Darkroom and the Freedom of Photographic Production in Britain, 1950s-present. This initiative investigates the link between home darkrooms and LGBTQI+ individuals’ quest for freedom of expression and visual representation starting in the 1950s. This research will delve into how home darkrooms provided LGBTQI+ individuals a secluded area for developing photographs. With a combination of archival research and contemporary collection, this project will enhance the Museum’s ‘Documenting Homes’ collection and inspire new approaches to present these narratives.
