Bhubaneswar: In a first for the state, Odisha police have commenced the procedure to acquire a robot for surveillance and patrolling at smaller airports. Additionally, a 2D wall radar, another advanced tool, is also being procured to improve airport safety.
“We have released tenders to obtain the two cutting-edge devices to strengthen the security framework at regional and small airports as part of a modernisation initiative. Given the escalating concerns about aviation safety, implementing state-of-the-art technology is essential to address various threats,” stated a senior police official to TOI.
The two advanced instruments, along with other security tools, will be positioned at five regional airports — Jeypore, Rourkela, Rangeilunda, Utkela, and Malkangiri. Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar and VSS airport in Jharsuguda will not be part of the scheme as they are managed under CISF’s oversight.
According to the preliminary strategy, one robot and a 2D wall radar will be acquired for testing purposes. The state police also mentioned that additional devices may be obtained based on their performance assessments.
Senior officials indicated that implementing robotic surveillance and patrolling could enhance safety through automation and precision. The robots are equipped with high-definition cameras that possess thermal and infrared capabilities, facilitating the monitoring and identification of issues that may not be apparent to humans.
The device employs light detection and ranging technology for comprehensive 3D environmental mapping, assisting in detecting unauthorized entries and security threats. It integrates data analytics and AI to observe passenger conduct, detect suspicious activities, and deliver immediate alerts to airport security personnel.
“The robot’s sensor technology enables obstacle evasion and seamless navigation amongst individuals during patrols. These units are outfitted with communication systems for prompt notification to control centers, offering live footage and critical information,” the police official commented.
The robots can work in tandem with existing security frameworks and staff, enhancing overall security consciousness and responsiveness to emergencies.
Officials stated that the 2D wall radars can detect human movement and hidden objects behind walls in vital airport zones. This equipment supports security teams during emergencies and anti-terrorism operations.
